Light Duty Diesel?
August 20th, 2007 • Related • Filed Under

Ford is ramping up hard to have a F150 and possibly the Expedition powered by a v8 diesel on the streets in 2009. Dodge is working a v6 diesel for 2010, Nissan and Toyota are both still at the drawing board on it.
What is GM doing? GM plans to have a 4.5 liter v8 that is turbocharged and to make it available in the H2, Silverado, and Sierra. Powered by a Duramax, it won’t share any parts with the current 6.6 liter. Horsepower is to be at least 310 and 520 pounds-feet of torque.
The cool thing is, the new diesel engine will fit in the same space as the current gas engines. GM says it can be used in other vehicles as well. But, which one would you like to see it in?

I wonder what the price differance will be
Comment by Jim on 20 August 2007:
I thought I saw where it said something about it costing almost $6,000.00 more for the diesel option.
Comment by chevyguy789 on 20 August 2007:
who cares about the price; just think of all of the mods!!!

I can’t wait to get my diesel half ton. I’ll love that truck forever.
Comment by mihc45 on 21 August 2007:
Ill be waiting in line to get mine! i read somewhere that the estimated MPG will be in the mid 30s!
Comment by Bullwinkle on 21 August 2007:
The diesel option would be ideal in the Suburban/Yukon XL, and the H3.
I’ve seen lots of Suburbans/Yukons towing boats, and the torque of a diesel in an H3 would be ideal for offroad. I imagine there will also be a market for offroad guys to buy these small diesels (and transmissions) from GM & put them in thier trail rigs.
I can’t wait to see what the fuel economy will be.
Comment by GM4Life on 21 August 2007:
520 lbs of torque in a half ton?? i like that :]
Comment by BigJohnson on 21 August 2007:
Sounds good to me… while they’re at it… why not offer the 6.6L for the half ton for an option as well? that would be nuts. as for the 6k mentioned earlier for a diesel setup… if you’re buying a new vehicle… 5k is negotiable. generally speaking, you can ALWAYS work a dealer down by at least 5k. besides, buying a new vehicle… 6k is small potatoes.

can’t wait 2 blow sum black smoke in a halfton…sounds like a plan

Comment by tlsz71 on 22 August 2007:

Comment by PerfectReign on 24 August 2007:
…and of course us Avalanche owners have to wait and see…
..grrr!
Comment by Hotwheelz on 25 August 2007:
i’ve swore up and down my next truck will be a diesel. the thought of a diesel in a halfton, that’s just awesome! maybe by then my degree will be far under my belt and i’ll be able to shell out 60g’s on a new truck. but the wife gets her hybrid highlander first.
Comment by Hotwheelz on 25 August 2007:
PS isn’t 310hp and around 600 ft lbs what the 6.6 is rated at now?
Comment by WAREAGLEZ71 on 27 August 2007:
put a diesel in everything…I LOVE THEM
Comment by stoute on 7 September 2007:
i love me halfton diesel would love to see a new truck come with one
Comment by 87Iroc on 11 September 2007:
Dodge is building a V8…not a V6 for half tons…
Comment by CSHARPE on 18 September 2007:
Diesel is 20 to 30 cents more a gallon (average) over regular gas…. like the performance numbers but not for the added expense though. That’s my first impression at least…
Comment by Chicknwing on 20 September 2007:
csharpe, most of the guys running v8s here dont see anywhere near the mpg that a diesel would get they may be getting 22 TOPS, now add 8-12 more mpg itd would even itself out, i am also one for the halfton diesel thatd be fricking sweet, call up banks power and twin turbo that bad boy =)

I LOVE the idea!
Comment by redvett01 on 30 October 2007:
I cant wait for the Homogenous charge compresson ignition GAS engines coming out in 2010 that will get better fuel economy, HP & torque. Much cheaper to buy than the $5-6000 option for the Diesel. GM already has 3.6L V6 engine getting 372 hp in testing.
Comment by mudbuddy on 1 November 2007:
what mods this will be a low sulfer engine with a DPF and regeneration don’t even think about touching the exhaust system on it
Comment by Big95z71 on 13 November 2007:
I like the idea but i think its pointless. The truck itself is going to be priced somewhat close to a 2500 duramax with less power and less towing capacity. Where the advantage unless you like to race.
Comment by Unrthdxdream on 16 November 2007:
The advantage is all those people who buy a diesel but don’t really need it can just buy a half ton instead and still get their diesel fix.

did ford really buy out cummins?
Comment by justy on 18 December 2007:
Gas engines and ethanol is a dieing breed. I don’t look for a gas engine in production after 10 years from now. Even honda quit making hybrids and went to diesel because they can get 56 mpg. They also are working on a diesel-hybrid which get close to 100 mpg. So ya, I can’t wait for the diesel half-ton to come out. I already talked it over with the wife and I’m going to trade off the 2500HD duramax for the half-ton diesel. Better ride. Better fuel economy. Better for the environment. Much better then ethanol which I learned from studies is causing respiratory infections. A 2500HD is a little to much truck for me. I don’t haul much anymore other then a few atv’s. So half ton would fit the bill perfect.
Comment by Stillakilla187 on 29 December 2007:
For that much torque, wouldnt you have to use a 3/4 ton running gear? that seems like it would put a lot of strain on stock components.
Comment by heavychevy66 on 23 January 2008:
I don’t think that GM needs a light duty diesel. dodge has the cummins I6, and Ford has the 6.4 Liter Turbodiesel, but they are just trying to better the Duramax which they clearly haven’t done. Truckin’ did a piece on the Dodge, Chevy, and Ford diesel’s a couple of months ago, and the Duramax won in almost every category, including horsepower, torque, and pulling capacity. The whole point of a diesel is for heavy duty jobs that require low-end torque and power, so why make a light duty diesel.
Comment by sooners7gators2 on 25 January 2008:
GM,Ford, and Dodge all use smaller diesels in foreign markets. The CTS in Europe has a diesel that can out perform the CTSV. I have ridden in a Ranger that has a small diesel in the Bahamas. They are beneficial in foreign markets because there are less emmisions tests. The benefit is better gas mileage for the performance. The downside is the pollution and the noise the diesel makes. I think it is something to persue. Look at older Volvo’s; they last a hell of a long time because they are a diesel, same with older Mercedes cars.
