View Full Version : How parasitic is an engine driven compressor?

Reading through various threads, I've come to the conclusion that I'd probably use an engine driven compressor when I get around to bagging a truck. The convenience of not having to rely on someone else to refill the tanks is probably the driving factor.
But I got to thinking... how counterproductive or even damaging could it be to either the compressor or the rest of the engine, especially when you start considering power adders like a SC, a turbo or even nitrous? What other downsides would there be?
Just trying to piece it all together here...

i havent lost a noticible amount of HP when the clutch is engauged.

for now ive decided to stick with dual electrics. For one...im building a performance motor and im not currently even running an ac compressor. It seems i hear alot of problems with the oiling systems or something to that effect. I heard somewhere than an ac comp takes up 15 hp but im not sure how true that was.
Someday i may have custom brackets made to run both a ac comp and a engine driven comp for the bags on the motor but for now im going to stick with electrics. The fill time cant be beat with the engine driven though. I dont plan on playing with the bags much anyways. The suspension is going to be geared towards performance more than to play with (dual swaybars, mufflers to slow it down etc)

i would think that when the clutch isn't engaged it wouldn't be too bad.

It should work with a s/c since the belt for the compressor comes from a double pulley from the alt. And with nitrous and such just put the clutch wire on a flip switch and pressure switch so it goes off automaticly and you can permenatly turn it off so it just free wheels. I should be running a radix s/c 6L in my '99 with an engine drivin...and through my searching I haven't found a problem yet.

:banghead: I need to read more... I forgot that there's a clutch in there so that they're not running constantly :dunce:

Yeah very little loss. I dont really notice mine when its on only the sound of it which isnt that loud. I was talking to Bryan@Airlift the other day and he was telling me he has an S10 with an Lt1 running an engine driven compressor. He's supposed to be getting some pictures of the setup.

You can run a switch if you want to have control if you want max power.
It's only gonna draw power when the clutch is engaged and that's for maybe a minute so I see no need in running electricl compressors.

I wonder how bad the pull would be on my V6?
Not bad at all. I had it on the 305 in the 83 that had very little HP and it wasn't noticable. You should be fine.

Yea, I dont think they make a kit for mine.

I don't think Air Lift makes a mounting bracket but alterimage said he was working on a mount he would be selling later on.

mine on a semi-tired 350 in a suburban so i need all the hp it can make to get it moving , but i only notice the noise and slight vibration throught the brake pedal but thats cause as of now my coalescing filter is zip tied to my brake booster.

I really hope you have the v6 in the malibu and not the 4-banger, or else you'd better get out and walk....

I may have had the bad taste in choosing the Malibu, but I at least had the presence of mind to go for the 6. I started off driving a 4 cyl LeBaron  not going to sink that low again at any cost. By the way, I'm talking trucks here!! :nutkick:

codeman I love the new sig! Even though that sucks! I feel for you, sorry Chuggernaut didn't mean to whore the tread. Listen to the other guys engine driven won't hurt anything for more than a minute or two.

i have an engine driven from airlift on my 2.2 s-10 and you can feel it a lil when you are rolling steady while it is pumping but in all honestly even me in that slo pos i never find myself needing to floor it while it is running, it's on a single 5 gallon tank takes about 35 seconds to fill from 0 psi to 175 psi at 3k rpm which airlift reccomends that you do not exceed 3k rpm while the comp is on

I have had my 350 wound up with the compressor running, way more than 3K and no ill effects here, but I made my own brackets and layed the compressor on its side, most all factory installations of york compressors were on their side.
