First off I am new to this site. Lots of great info. I have a 2002 Chevy Ext. Cab with a 5.3 and am putting on a magnaflow 5x8x18" muffler. It will be
2.5" in with dual 2.5" out the back at 45 degree angle. I am wondering if 3.5" stainless tips will sound any different than 3" tips. The tips will be 16" long. Each person I ask tells me something different. Any feedback would greatly be appreciated.

With a 3.5" tip....there will be more of a rapse in the exhaust but deeper at idle. 3" would be a true sound.

the larger(diamater)the deeper/throatier the sound will be at idle and when you get on it there will be a harsher crackly sound. When you have a longer tip (im talkin like 24+ inches), it wont be as throaty at idle but in the upper rpms it will have much more of crackly "can hear every cylinder fire" sound.
think of it as a megaphone, the tips change and project the sound

I've got 4 inch by I think 16 inch tips. Nice and deep at idle but sounds like the world is coming to an end at WOT. A lot of that is the bullets though:D
