Something affordable but good? I don't need/want a top of the line one, as I can't afford it, but I'd like something decent and reliable as an alarm and remote start for my Tahoe.

Thanks!

There are a couple of brands out there that are cheap. I would look at some of your local car stereo shops

I have a clifford alarm and remote start. It's definitly not the top of the line but it works pretty damn good.

We use Crimestopper Auto starers for entry level users . They are great and are NOT JUNK. They have good key fobs and easy to install. Stay away from Design Teck and wally world type units. If you can get a good deal on a DEI product (Viper/Sidewinder) and install it yourself that will also save some bucks. PS ALWAYS use your tack wire!!! Don't ever go "tackless" When you do the install.......Mike

If you can get a DEI product thats the best way to go, however, autopage makes a pretty nice unit that is simple to install. I have put several of them in and havent had any problems. As far as the tach wire, thats a personal preference thing, I never use the tach wire on gas engines, setting the crank time has always worked good for me. However, on a diesel using the tach wire is a must.

If you don't use a tach wire, And you have a low batt or restart on a real hot day or a real cold day you could and or/WILL grind the starter. It only takes 5 xtra min to hook up and is real easy to find on ALL chev trucks and SUVs. ( Iwill give you the wire data if needed) I have been installing auto Starts since 85, and I have seen lots of "tachless " problems. an xtra 5min vs Installing a starter or flywheel ....its up to you bro
Just my 2 cents worth.....Mike:charge:

If you do your homework, you will know that Design Tech is part of DEI! I used one of these remote start/alarm combos on my old Jeep. Worked great and still working great 3 years later.

I went tackless but did the voltage thing on my nbs, should be no problem on a nbs gmc because of the starter relays used......

I always use voltage sensing if the alarm has it. Never used a tach, never had a problem.

I have Marksman in my truck. They have the m6a which is remote start/keyless only. We install it for $179. Great product, never had a problem. DEI is also pretty good, just stay away from the DEI brands you havent heard of. Like Boa, its a DEI product, but its a POS.

I've had a basic keyless-entry/alarm/remote-start from Viper (obviously part of DEI) on my truck for 5 years now with zero problems. Awesome range too, I'd highly recommend it, does everything it's supposed to and nothing it's not. Unlike my budget Bulldog system I had first....that was a fire waiting to happen IMO

My very favorite Auto Starter is the DEI Sidewinder 6500. I am not sure if that is still a current model number but Viper and Sidewinder are just great units! I have had Great luck with Crime stopper units also. Somebody told me to do my homework and that Design Tech is DEI ...Well yes but you need to understand ..DEI has a record of buying companies up and F'ing them up or just leaving them F'd up. Clifford, Avital, Ungo Box PPI, ORION come to mind rite off. Also DEI has the worst habit of Suing companies for copy write or design infringement for $hit they did not design.. Just thought you mite like to know.
Oh yea Always use the tack wire. Voltage sens work good BUT it will get your starter(grind grind) If you have battery or charging problems .... I have seen it happen . My shop has done thousands of starters through out the years (24) and we have seen lots of weird stuff, Let me just tell you, hooking up that G.D. tach wire is well worth it!!
Just my 2cents worth ........

i install astra start(scytek) all day long, good for the money, Astro-start is the best, if you can get one do it!

i can get you wiring info also, if you want to pay shipping, i could try an hook you up with a new unit, "prep the harness" for your vehicle, i'll talk with the boss about pricing.

p.s. this has both tach and tachless, works good both ways

I had the DEI remote start on my 94. I had the Viper alarm/remote start on my 00. I have the same thing for my 01 now. My dad had the DEI remote start on his 97 and now on his 03. Once you have them, you want have another without it. We're both very happy with the product. I think they were around $550 installed the last time.
