I went to a reputable exhaust shop today to get an estimate for my exhaust system. They told me $480 from downpipe to tailpipe including muffler and converter, all stock. Since my truck sitts pretty low i was thinking about just having a turn down which will knock off $80. Doesnt this seem a little expensive?? How much louder will it be with the turndown??

if it's going to be a stock muffler, it won't be that loud with turn downs, why not get an aftermarket muffler for that price? the cat it probably the most expensive piece, stock cats are around 250bucks, for 480, make sure its all going to be stainless

What mufflers? What cats? Or is it one and one? Or are you going all new from boat anchor to tip? I took my truck down running open headers. I opted for 4 x 16 inch stainless silverline tips, 2.5 inch aluminized pipe and fully welded joints. Cost was 288 me providing the bullets and x pipe, he did the rest. That is a lot of pipe, probably close to 30 feet. Describe your system a little more for me please. Also this is on your V6 right?

That price is mainly coming from the Cat converter as mentioned above. I wouldn't pay that much for something not to be aftermarket...if your gonna change it...why not get it different then stock?...sounds like too much I think IMO

The quote was for stock muffler and stock cat. I dont really want anything special, just something quiet for now untill i build my V8. If i do it with a tailpipe ill have it tucked up under the rear quarter. Will they be able to keep it from hitting the axle?? I just have a flipkit now but might install shackles in the future

Seriously :wtf: You want a stock exhaust system? Go to oreillys and get a walker quiet flow system, they suck, are stock and will do what you want for like 125 or so. If I was running an exhaust shop I'd hose anyone that came in asking for stock components.

Well i went to Midas today after work to get a price. They told me $350 plus tax for a cat back system with stock muffler or an 80 series Flowmaster single in, dual out and tuck up into the rear quarter. After i got home from there i got a tire iron and punched all of the honeycombs out of the converter. Is the 80 series with punched out cat gonna be too loud or resonate? I want maybe a little bit of rumble at the tail pipe at the most. Or should I just go with a stock muffler with the cat punched out?? I really appreciate the help guys.

Sounds like you may as well get stock **** but if it will work, get a stock cat back for a 5.7 and let your little v6 flow a bit more.

IMO thats way to high, I went to mighty muffler and got my duals with a single 3 inch in and dual 2.5 inch out flowmaster 40, 2.5 inch aluminized pipe, from the y-pipe back, and stainless tips, for $250. I also had no cat.

I think they have the same sized pipe. My dads x-cab 95 5.7 exhaust looks to be identical to my bro's 94 4.3 exhaust. I was a little suprised. The mufflers may differ a little internally, but the rest is the same.

I was thinking 4.3 exhaust was like 2 1/4 tail pipe, maybe I'm wrong. I know 5.7 exhaust is a measly 2.75 that would only support a V6 somewhat decently.

You could be right, exhausts usually lasts less than 3-5 years here, so both my bro's and my dad's have been replaced, and they could very well have been different from the factory. I know the replacement part for both of them is the same.

I've never been around v6's so I dont' know. I do know stock 5.7 exhaust sucks in every way.
Drew just go to a parts house and get a walker quiet flow system, lifetime gaurantee and everything.

HUH? My 88's LO5 came stock with a 3 inch unit. I remember that, because at the time, the L98 Iroc and TA had a 2.75 inch exhaust for a engine with 30 more HP, stock - and I thought that my trucks exhaust being larger was odd.

I wouldn't doubt that. Our 88 beater had a 3 inch system on it, it was aftermarket stock replacement but still 3 inch and even mandrel bent. My dad ordered a single 3 inch system that fit a suburban for his 89 to convert it from 2 tail pipes to one big 3 inch pipe. I think one hanger was different but it worked out fine.

2.75 stock on a 5.7??? I am pretty sure its 2.25".
I don't think its gonna make a difference really... Its a electronic controlled engine and don't put out much exhaust to begin with. Besides, backpressure is good for it too.. Lose it and u lose power.

Your damn vortec probably couldn't handle anything more then 2.25 inch pipe. Every 350 TBI I've ever seen has had at least a 2.75 inch pipe on it.

The Vortec 350 got dual 1 7/8" pipes from the manifolds to the cats, the 2500 series trucks got dual 2 1/4" to the cats.

Enough with all the bickering!!! Well i got the exhaust on today and I really like it. It quiet with a bit of a rumble at the tailpipe and sounds good at higher rpm also. Its a 80 series Flowmaster single in dual outran to the rear quarters and tuck up.
