i just went to get a quote on an exaust for the truck. cat back duals with glass packs. the guy said between $350 and $400! is he just screwin with me because i'm a kid or something or is this really the going rate? i know glass packs are cheap. the pipe it self can't be that much. what's the deal with that? he said a y pipe after the cat then the glass packs and tips... one more thing about the shop i went to is that i asked if they could throw some cut-outs on too and how much extra and the guy gave me a blank stare and said "what do you mean, cut-outs?" he was about 40 or so i would guess too.

edit: this probably should have gone in the exaust fourm huh...

price will vary depending on local rates, gauge/type of tubing used, how its bent and the glasspacks used but thats about average for a normal shop. Look at the price of any decent cat-back exhaust system online, some sell upwards of 600+ and most are around $300.

perfect reason to buy a small mig welder and do it yourself

the welder is becoming an option... except i dont know how to weld and i dont think under my truck is a very good place to learn.

i would just buy a cutout from summit and have them weld them in instead of them making one...matter o fact, thats what i did. they are only about $25 for one

that was the plan. i asked, and i quote "can i have you guys weld a cut out in right after the cat?" see above post for the reaction.

find a different shop.
sometimes the little mom-pop type garages are really good. either that, or look around. I picked the shop that I used for my car when I saw a custom dirt racer having headers fabbed up there. Turned out be their weekend hobby. the guys there are great. they don't worry about anything. pretty much do anything I or others I have pointed to their shop have asked for.

288 for my true duals. I supplied the bullets and X pipe but that was it. For 288 I got about 30 feet of 2.5 inch aluminized pipe and my stainless tips.

I have never paid over 300 for a full install. My Impala with duals and flowmaster 40 series, removing the cats, pipes from the manifolds back, and STAINLESS 3" rolled 18" tips 45ed behind the wheels was 300 installed. My truck with a dual in/out flow 50 with stainless tips all the way out the back was right at 250 (bout 5 years ago). My dual bullets, pipes from the header collectors back, X pipe, dual camaro stainless rectangle tips, and labor was only 280.

yeah thats 5YRS ago...

:word: the price of metal has gone up alot lately, but I still think alot of these prices are very high. My friend has an exhaust shop here, and he only charges 175 for a split dual sytem, and thats what 90% of the trucks get that go to him.

Man, those places are expensive! The place I go, never charges more than $150 for labor. ($50 per hour)
They fabbed up a complete exhaust for my vette for $150...
Literally took pieces of mandrel bent tubing and welded it all up.

Like it was stated before, it all depends on locale, type of shop, and what you want. You would think that the large chains would be able to do enough quantity to keep their prices low, but around here that's not the case.

Yes, that price does sound high to me. I was quoted $150 for dual Bullets, X, and turndowns (cat-back). That was through a Ma-n'-Pa shop (literally), and at first sounded a bit high to me. I'm still debating whether or not to do it myself.

I'd still call around, and get prices from a few places though. It never hurts to check, and in this case the shop you're complaining about seems a little out of the loop, so I definately would. And, yes some people will screw with young people, just because they think anyone under 25 is using Mommy and Daddy's money.
