What were you expecting? A close ratio sports car tranny? The NV4500 is a GREAT tranny, one of the best out there, but it is one of the last ones I would ever consider using for trying to go fast, its not at all designed for it. Its made pull things, and last just about forever doing it, two traits that are the opposite of go-fastness.
If you want to go fast I'd swap in a t-56 with a divorce mounted transfer case, or dare I say it, and auto... :run:

Why would anyone think that a transmission with a granny gear would be good for racing?

Maybe look into the close ratio T-56 6 speed trans from a 93-97 LT1 car. The are the same length as the 700r4/4l60e and even use the same yoke and driveshaft.

I know its an automatic response to the "what manual tranny should I use?" question, but I don't think a T-56 would work in the case of a 4x4.

Look into the Tremec TKO series tranny. They have several options available. I have a TKO 600 that I am putting behind my 496 BBC. I am using the Mc Cleod twin disc clutch and there hydro throwout bearing.

I'll gladly take that NV4500 off your hands. In the off-road world, the NV4500 is king of the slush boxes!
