Hello All:
I've got a '94 Yukon with aftermarket speakers in the dash/rear roof (Installed by previous owner). I just picked up some speakers (out of a brand new cobalt, nothing special) and wanted to ADD them since I only have 4 speakers as of right now.
I pln to purchase a 2 channel amp to power my single 12" sub, so I have 2 questions.
A) Can/Should I power it off of the head unit or the amp?
B) Where is a good place to install these speakers if any? The doors?
Thanks.

You can't just add speakers to a system. If you have an aftermarket head unit there's a good chance that it has preamp outputs, so you would be able to run a small amp off of the preamp to power the speakers, or you would have to replace (not necessarily in the same place) the old speakers.

Sorry for not divulging all the details...lol
I have a Pioneer head unit with a 50wx4 pre-amp output (so like, what, 16watt per line)
Having four speakers just isn't cutting it.

4 speakers should be plenty IF you pick the appropriate speakers and amplify them correctly. Combined with your 12in subwoofer, they should sound pretty good. Do you know which brand and model speakers you have in your vehicle currently?

I think a lot of my problems come from the fact that the truck is old, panels are loose, sound is absorbed, sometimes things rattle, etc.
When I bought it, I pulled otu a semi-functioning Alpine unit with a '97 date on it, so I assume the speakers were put in in 1997, on the verge of 10 years old.
Both sets are pioneers. I'll snap some pictures here in a second.
Thanks,
Sam

More won't solve your problem, you need better and a better install job.

On my Wifes 4dr Hoe,we have an alpine Head Unit powering Alpine mids in their factory locations and a single JL w6 powered by an old Hifonics Zeus amp and it sounds freaking amazing. All crossed over by the HUs internal x-over.Bass hits hard and the mids are loud and clear.
You are definately doing something wrong.

I guess. I didn't install these, they were done by the previous owner.
Oh, and to clarify, there is no sub, YET. I wanted to sort this issue out before I went and ordered the sub/amp.

If you don't "need" tons of power for your sub, but a 4 channel amp and use the other two channels to power some new 6.5's (or 6.5 components). It will REALLY help your sound.
