What is the loudest street legal exhaust out there? I am looking for the straight pipes, or straight headers sound, yet legally be able to drive it on the street.

if you want to be creative you could drill out glass packs and run a straight pipe through them. Let me tell you I am a cop in Kansas it doesnt matter if you have mufflers or not if it is real loud at night we will stop you and say hey get it fixed so people can sleep.
I am not trying to be an *******. If it were up to me I wouldnt care how loud it was. You have to have a muffler on a vehicle, now if you drill it out and run a pipe through there you could get away with it but they still might tag you on too damn much noise...I dont know where you live so its hard to say.
Just my .02 cents
good luck with your project.

That is good to know, because I will be in Kansas alot. I live in Kansas City, Missouri (Actually I live out in the country... my mailing addy is Parkville). My mother lives in Johnson County in a sports-car filled subdivision w/ stuck up people, so they might not like that too much... They don't like rednecks w/ big trucks much. Especially loud ones.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I live off State line on the Missouri side, about a mile south of 435. I think mine is too quiet now but my neighbors disagree. Every time I see my next door neighbor, all she says is, " I can always tell when you're coming and going. Why is it so loud?" I just laugh.
If you want a good system, go see Greg at Rose's Muffler in Grandview. They are on the west outer road just past Truman Corners. He is the best exhaust man in KC. He is out of town till Tuesday. I'll be up there Tuesday afternoon. Tell him I sent you you.

Really? That's cool. I've been at K-State for the last 5 years, and I've got one more to go. I spent too much time in Aggieville, and had to repeat a year. :D

In the area of Calif. where I live, you are pretty much left alone unless someone complains. Then You are required to rev the engine to 3000 rpm where a db reading is taken. If you louder than xxdb (area specific) you are ticketed and given the chance to "repair" the problem. If you show proof that you corrected the `problem' all or part of the fine - $ 271.00 - may be forgiven. If a second complaint is recieved the fine is doubled no forgiveness.

I ran mine like that for 2 years and it sounded good, but it was damn loud. People could honestly here me coming from almost a mile away.:read: I guarantee he will get pulled over with that set up in Kansas. I did. Not only that, but finding someone to do the exhaust work will be hard because its a $6000 fine if they get caught. It's a Federal Law. My friend with the exhaust shop got busted a couple years ago.:read:

I had a Heatthrob dual catback on my 97 F-150. It had the mufflers right at the tips, which stuck out the back under the bumper.
This package was pretty loud right from the get, and resonated inside the cab a bunch, which I didn't mind. :smokin:
Well, then the packing blew out of the tips, and I, of course, wasn't saying anything to the cops. If they'd have pulled me over, I'd have just played dumb. :dunce:
So, then I added headers, and I must say, I had THE baddest sounding 4x4 truck most people will ever hear outside of auto shows!:rocking: :head:
Alas, the Heartthrob metal wasn't what it was puported to be, and it kept rusting through at various spots, and it went with the truck when I traded it in on the rig you see in my sig...hey, that rhymed!

Correct me if i am wrong but from the way i understand your post its illgeal to run nothing but that converter? If your saying that i disagree.. You have to have the emissions crap on your truck "cat O2 sensors and crap" but your not required to have a muffler cause its jsut a sound devise.. Correct me if i am wrong but i am sure thats how it works.. Somone needs to find hte law...

Yes, you must have a muffler on your vehicle. We have safety inspections every year, and if you don't pass, you don't get to renew your tags. You now have the option of getting 2 year tags. This is the law here.

Yeah, its real easy to get away with not having a muffler. Doesn't affect emissions at all, and if its not too loud, then nobody will care.
Case in point, my friend has an 89 stepside, used to have no muffler, just two 2" pipes splitting where the muffler used to be, dumped on each corner of the rear of the truck. That thing was half as loud as my 91 at the time with catco cat and flowmaster muffler dumped before the axle.

My headers are illegal. My truck came from the factory with only one cat, and now it has two b/c of my true duals, also illegal. All I'm saying is, my system is far from being legal, but unless you know someone who is willing to risk their ass for you, you will not pass inspection here. And I'm guessing that if Aquaman knew someone he probably wouldn't have posted this. Across the stateline in Kansas, they don't have any testing whatsoever. You can literally drive anything down the street. Here is the Missouri law. Go to page 34 (http://www.sos.state.mo.us/adrules/csr/current/11csr/11c50-2.pdf) and check it out.
If your vehicle was built after 81 you must also have a cat. One day last summer, we were at the shop and this guy in an s10 pulled up and said he wanted to take the cat off. My friend told him about the law and the guy tried telling us his s10 was built in 80. We started laughing our asses off, and told the guy he better put it in a museum cuz thats one rare SOB, since they didn't come out till 82. :D It must be nice not having to deal with all this BS. You guys are lucky. :read:

Its also illegal to J walk or spit in public. In other words run whatever you want and enjoy it. If you have to pass emmissins keep the cat, if not don't. I worked at a shop and yeah its supposedly illegal to remove cats( I am in Canada though) but we did it every day anyhow. Up here nobody gives a rats ass about emmissions. And we also removed mufflers and left convertors on a daily basis, same deal. If you are so worried about the law, leave the thing alone, or run a emmission approved cat back, but if you want a real upgrade build your own system and enjoy it.

Does anyone know of a site where u can find the laws about what is legal and what isn't? I live in alabama, and there are TONS of trucks running no muffler, and a bunch that are running no cats too. Just curious if this is illegal or if i could take off my flowmaster and run no muffler.
By the way, im in montgomery, al
Thanks
