View Full Version : New Amp Problem...

OK, so I just got in a Hifonics Zxi 6006 amp, and it doesn't work! I'm runnin' it bridged, and here's the kicker.... it only lists a 4ohm bridged, but I hooked it up to my Kicker Comp VR (dual 4, wired at 2). Didn't even think about it, but all I wanted to do was test it out. Is there a chance that the reason the amp is going into protect mode is that it's not getting enough impedance? I've checked all the wires from amp to sub, and it turns on like it should, but goes directly to its DC fault protect mode. I haven't had a chance to put a 4ohm sub on it to test yet.

:think:If you have the amp bridged at 2ohms then yeah, Id say its the reason the amp is going into protect instantly. Hook your 2 ohm load to one of the channels (not bridged) and see if it works, then try it on the other. It should play this way as a test to see if the amp is ok and both channels are functioning.
If you wish you can use only one coil and short the other to itself (+ to -) to give the amp a 4 ohm load bridged as well.
There is tons of info on the web about running only one coil of a DVC sub with shorting the unused coil, using a different resistors on the unused coil or leaving the unused coil untouched. All depends on the desired result. Its been done for years.
Here is a very good explaination courtesy of Adire Audio a well known speaker manufacturer and designer:

Or bridge it at 8 and see if it works that way.

Must've had a brain fart! Didn't even think about tryin' it on each channel! I thought about runnin' the sub at 8, but that'd require me takin' it out of the box, and I'm lazy!
If I had allen wrenches with me, I'd try it when I go to lunch, but I guess it'll have to wait till after work.

Hmmm I wonder what that little instruction booklet with the amp is for.... I love it when people don't follow directions then can't figure out why things don't work....LOL Luckily Hifonics took into consideration that people have a tendency to do things their own way. Hence, the fault protection mode.... Save someone from wasting time and money....:banghead:

You should be able to wire those subs as a 4 ohm load for that amp.

Well, come to find out, I'm a dumbass! LOL. The amp was turning on and working fine the entire time. I just had the sub/bass setting as low as it would go, and the remote set at 0db. These settings yielded nothing goin' to the sub! Turned up the bass, and bumped the remote up about half way, and walah! Now I really feel like a friggin' moron!:eyecrzy:

Glad ya figured it out. You still shouldn't run the amp at 2 ohms bridged... even if it doesnt go into protect. Make the wiring changes to get it to the proper load so it will last. No need to abuse it unnecessarily.
