Wassup guys. Well, just so happens I've never taken the headliner out of a 88-98 ext. cab chevy so I need some info. I'll be working on it in he future and would like to have a heads up. Do I need to get it out by removing the back window like the newer Fords? Also, what needs to come off as far as any panels, etc? I know the dome light and pull downs...haven't checked it out yet. Thanks.

It shouldn't be any diff. than a reg cab headliner except for removing the overhead console if you have one.

Remove the visors, the trim above and below the back window then take the trim off the A,B, and C pillars and it should come down. Be careful because by the rear view mirror there are two strips of velcro.

I was more concerned about how to actually get it OUT of the truck...but thanks. I was wondering b/c even if you curve it, it looks like there could be complications...due to the ext. cab. portion making it bigger then the door opening of course...even if it's slanted.

Reclining the front seats all the way back might be helpful. If that doesn't work then get some dynamite. ;-)

I did remove the headliner from an '86 ext cab S10 years ago, I don't think I had a problem with the thing breaking or anything, somehow I got it out through the door hole.

I removed it in my ext cab last year. It came out via the passenger side door, but it was very tight. I think I had one or maybe both seats out (can't remember for sure).

I removed quite a few interior parts, mainly because I was re-doing the whole interior. But that made it easier to get the headliner out. I think you have the newer interior style so I'm not sure how to remove all the panels and trim in yours.

For my 90, the plastic trim above the doors was the hardest to remove. The panel at the back above the rear window was also tough and I broke most of the plastic tabs when removing it. The panels around the ext cab windows pulled off after removing the rear armrests and screws, and upper seat belt mounts.

As someone else pointed out, there are two velcro strips behind the front edge of the headliner. Just pull down carefully or slide your hand across to detach. The roof side of the velcro is glued to plastic strips that snap into some holes. Mine cracked due to age and I had to make new ones.

Just be patient and do it carefully and you should be fine, and be careful of the rear-view mirror.

While I had the trim removed, I replaced the weatherstripping around both doors. If yours is old or damaged, this is a good time to replace it.

Here's a picture with the headliner removed so you can see the position of the clips and velcro strips.

i just removed the headliner in my '93 today. took about 45min.? I removed the rear view mirror, both visors. was able to cheat the a-pillar mldgs out without much fuss. removed the coathooks, removed the seat belt bolts. removed the rear armrests and screws that go through the interior trim. gently pulled trim away from 1/4 glass area. did not remove back top panel. slid headliner forward. (needs to move @2 1/2 inches to clear rear top mldg) eased towards steering column. then it was clear of both 1/4 glass mldgs. slid back to rear glass manuvered it around the steering column. kept it forward of the 4wd shift lever and removed it out of the pass side door. I took my time and used plenty of patience. Steve
