Sometimes it would be easier if life had fewer choices. I've searched and read to death and I still don't have a clue.
I need a head unit. I know a lot of guys on here run Alpine and I always sort of felt that while they are good they are over priced for what you get (not saying that I'm against running one). I had bad experiences with Eclipse but that was 10 years ago when they were first starting out.
At this point I don't need to interface an iPOD so that's not a big concernt. I'm looking to spend $2-300.
So, what do you think?

Pioneer 680 would be a great choice for you.

Id go with an Alpine. I wish I had in the first place. I would like to get an iPod in the future and they seem to have the best setup, just a 30 dollar cable to hook it up to the stereo.

I made my own IPOD adapter from a headphone cord and RCA jacks. I have a kenwood deck, not near the best, but it works for me.

Fantastic. Their new line is really an improvement over last years. I'm really impressed with them, they are tooling to the iPod crowd, yet are still keeping decks for the audio enthusiasts. As far as eXcelon having better SQ than all the rest of the decks, they dont have a deck that comes close to the 880PRS.

I just bought the Pioneer DEH-M780 and it continues to impress me as the days go by, and you can't beat the price, also there is a ipod adapter you can buy from them for 50 bucks.
