Dont post alot here, but I thought I would share what I've been doing.
Basically whats in my sig. The '05 5.3 and 4L65 is installed and almost running. I put a 228/232 .588 .595 110lsa cam, Patriot Gold double springs, chrome moly push rods, Vig 3200 stall, and a Shaner S3 throttle body. We will be doing the tuning ourselves.
I have a Detroit True Trac also, but I'm going to stay with the 3:08s for a while.
Anyway, if anyone is interested, I'll post up some pics.
of course we want pics. any anyone on here will tell you that :nopics:

Hey man is that going to be were the pcm is going to be from now on? If so have you thought about flipping it over? Just a thought since most ppl like the looks of the other side better. Just an idea. Looks good tho

Wouldent mind doin a 6.0 swap but that would be way more expensive then just gettin a crate with a cam and just callin it a day.
How much is the 5.3 costin you??

We bought a wrecked '05, so alot of parts came off of it.
Heres some of what one might spend.
take out 5.3 and trans $800.00
custom harness $750.00
radiator from newer truck (opt) $100.00
electric fans, aftermarket $200.00
pcm, usually the '02 F-body $100.00
stock motor and frame mounts $100.00
mount adapters $ 45.00
tach signal divider (for factory) $ 50.00
shifter, if you need it $150.00
misc fuel lines and adapters $100.00
'00 Vetter fuel filter
has a return and regulator $ 60.00
fan harness if you need it $ 70.00
fab exhaust ( we used stuff we
had laying around) $100.00
throttle cable $ 25.00
misc $200.00
That gives you $2850. Some are estimates, but its not too far off. We didnt spend that much being a shop, but we also did extras like the cam, stall, springs, etc...
All in all, I think its a good way to go. Gen III motors are great for power, reliability, and even mileage.
May be a week or so until I finish the last few things as we leave for PRI in the a.m. and my wife it having back surgery on Monday.
I will do an update and post a vid when its done.

What sort of problems do you run into with the swap? Obviously the harness is different...but what else? A/C compressor? fuel lines? motor mounts?

Driving that cam/gear combo on the street will suck, the Vig TC will help, make sure you get a big trans cooler.
Sounds like a cool project, I bid you well.

You will have to do one of three things for the a/c. Notch the frame to keep it in a stock location. 2. Get the Sanden compressor set up from Street and Performance. 3. What I am doing; make a custom bracket to mount the compressor off of the pass head.
I am using an '05 motor, so the set up was originally returnless. If you get a '00 Vette ( I have to verify the year) fuel filter, it has a built in regulator and return. There are a few fittings you have to buy and fuel line of course.
Mounts are easy. You can get adapter plates off of ebay for $40.00. We got g.m. frame and motor mounts and with the adapter plates it bolts right in. There is a little raised section on the engine mounts that needs to be cut out.
I made all of my factory gauges work, so you would need to keep the necessary harness for that. There is alot of other stuff you can cut out of the harness to neaten it up.
We just fabbed out own exhaust. We used 6.0 manifolds ported and true duals with an "X" pipe.
If $$ isnt an issue, getting a good harness made is the way to go.
We used a 4L65 and a stock driveshaft from a similar year with an auto will bolt right in. With my truck the crossmember even lined up with original holes in the frame. If you have an auto to start with, you may have to drill holes.
I used a radiator from a newer truck. To make it tuck under the rad. support, you just cut two holes so it will seat in.
I used after market fans, but made a harness to work like factory instead of the little probe through the radiator. That way, the pcm controls the fan.

The 3.08's are a stronger gear and will help you with traction.
See how it works with your 3,08's then you can make adjustments in the future.
I bet that cam rumpety rumps in a 5,3 yeee hawww
4.10's are cool, but it depnds on how fast you cruise on the highway. If you want 80 mph cruising, 3.73's might be better.
I ran 4.10's and a 28" tire and 80mph would give me 2750 rpm. 2500 rpm would give me 72 mph. The 4.10s were awesome for city and strip, but either a 30" tire or 3.73's would have suited my highway cruising habits a bit better.
I trapped the 1/4 mile at 4900 rpm and that was perfect for my stock cam/longblock setup.

The only thing that worries me is the harness. I would love to do this to my yukon. I come across some deals sometimes. Would like some more info on the harness!

Didnt get to work on it much this week. Wife had surgery and other work. We did get to drive it a little. Still dont have posi installed yet, but with the 3:08s, you just gas it and it will do a burn out like a Pro Mod car. Really though, that doesnt mean crap. How it pulls when it hooks does. So far, not much else to tell. Alot of tuning to be done still. We are back to work Wednesday morning to hopefully get it done.

Been watching your progress on your project and wonder if you know of a shop that can tune a 383 vortec with a custom cam and several other mods. Originally thought of a westers but keep thinking it would be better tuning it running than by mail. The motor will be coming out of the shop and installed a few weeks and I would like to find somebody as close as possible to do this. Any help or advice appreciated from anyone. Thanks.

Are you just using the factory pulley setup? I have an 01 5.3 with 50,000 miles that I bought and I have been slowly piecing together to go into my 91 rcsb. Can you post a photo of your serpentine?

Yes, its the stock set up. I used electric fans instead of the mech. one, but its not changed at all. What makes you ask?
I dont have air on it yet, but you either notch the frame, or buy the Sanden set up. We are going to fab up a bracket and use the factory compressor.
I'll try and get a few more pics up soon, or a video if we get it all done.

Sorry so long for follow up. Idle is bad ass. I will get a vid up soon. Also, now that the motor is in, its coming out. Just made a deal to get a forged 347, STS with a PT74 turbo, fmic, meth. This set up put my customer in the 12's in a crew cab. Now it will be in a much lighter truck.
Now starts my quest for 10's.
