Im driving my dads 01 D-max till january. he wanted the car and his truck needed sum maintainance, no one where he is stationed can work on the new diesels. So to the point. I dont much about diesels, but i do know that his needs some work. It smokes ( i know diesels smoke) but this isnt the good kinda black "diesels are sposed to smoke like that" smoke, its blue gray. which seems to be either burning oil, or a glow plug. it doesnt smell like oil and he has never replaced the glowplugs (its got 125,000miles). So i think it may be a plug, ya'll tell me what u think. Oh and i was thinking bout maybe getting him a programmer for christmas. nothing crazy tho, just something that could reprogram for larger tires and more mpg that can add alittle extra power on the side. umm, its been in south west texas just north of tha river if u need that info.
Sorry for the short story lol. help me if yall can, thanks anyway if not.

Enjoy driving the Max! As far as programmer's, do some reading. There are many now that can change tire size. You will see everyone has a brand preference.

the smoking is more than likley the injectors. the 2001-2003 duramax have a special policy from gm to extend the injector warr
to 7yrs 200,000 miles. but for this warr it doesnt apply to just smoking, only long or no start and fuel in crankcase oil. so just go to the dealer and tell them it is hard to start and you think you smell fuel in the oil. most dealers will put 8 new injectors in without doing the corect test and just seeing if it smokes at idle and checking the balance rates with the tech 2. got any questions just PM me, i am a gm truck mechanic if you need help.

its the injectors. first check your oil and see if there is fuel in it. take it to the dealer and tell them to do a balance check. if there was fuel in the oil tell that that as well. make sure you take it to a good dealership that sees a lot of diesels. as far as the programmer it all depends on what you want to spend. i have the edge w/attitude monitor. i picked it up used for 450. i like it a lot, its one of the more popular programmers. there is also the bully dog. that one also comes with a monitor. anything over 100hp+ can hurt the tranny if you are driving it hard in the upper gears. look on ebay for used chips. also, check this site out www.thedieselplace.com lots of info there... good luck

Awsome guys, thanks. My mom is taking it to the local dealership, they see alot of diesels. Hmm injectors huh. So I tell ma mom to tell them that there was some fuel in the oil and to check the balance and it does indeed turn out that it was the injectors then they will put new one in and warranty them for 200,000 miles?! thats a bloody good deal. haha but ya, it smoked the whole way up from Marfa. . . All ten hours. Well thanks again guys!

They won't warranty them for an additional 200K - they'll just extend the coverage to 200K on the truck itself

make sure you check the oil, if there is a lot of fuel in the oil it thins it out and the oil doesnt do its job!

hmm, i checked the oil, but i couldnt tell. we changed it bout 1000 miles ago tho so maybe it hasnt had enough time for enough to seep through. However we took it by the GM dealer and the guy that looked at it said that he thought it was the injectors too and that they would check em and replace them if need be. good thing is that it would be free! bad news it that it wont be done till thursday. darn lol. thanks again guys!

What else happened? Funny noises, lots of smoke (and color), funny smells, lights flickering, etc.?
