I bought a homelink overhead console from a 2001 Tahoe for my 2006 silverado. The plug was a direct fit. Except.....the map lights no longer turn on when the door is opened. But the homelink works. I had to wire the homelink dimmer to the cluster or the button lights would dim when the interior light went out.
I then tapped into the computer controlled dimmer power and fed them to the lights. Great, now the lights turn on when the door is opened and the homelink works. But now, when the interior lights fade out and I turn on one of the map lights it turns on all of the interior lights. The problem I have is the map lights are already hooked to the 12V constant Orange wire and into the Dimmer wire (Grey). When I turn the map light on I think it's back feeding the Grey wire and powering the dome light and both map lights. I can't figure a way around it since the dome light switch is only two wires and the old console was a circuit board with 3 contacts. Has anyone else had a similar problem. I can currently live with it since they come on when the door is opened and dim. But I'd like to figure out a way to fix it if it's possible. I'll keep my eye out for a homelink console from a 03 and newer vehicle if I can't modify this one.

ok when you say domelight switch, what is the function of that switch? does it only turn on the domelight or all of the interior lights?

if you still have your original console you need to swap the switches. thats what i did to mine,i also had to find a always hot for the homelink

Yeah, I meant the map light button. When I hit the button all of the interior lights illuminate.

I'll have to look at the original console again. The buttons on my original console are hardwired into a circuit board and the new console is soft wired. I might be able to remove the original buttons and attach the wires in the new console.

I recently did the same...

The new console had a 5 pin connection if I remember correctly. The factory harness will plug into the 3 pins side and the colors should match. The plug still has 2 wires, an orange and a white. These are the homelink wires. I ran 2 new wires under the headliner for these 2 connections. I used a vampire tap and tapped the white wire. I connected the other side to a constant power source in the fuse panel. That wire powers the homelink. You need to have a constant power source, because if you don't, after 10 minutes, the homelink won't work. I originally hooked it to another source and it required me to turn on the map lights before pressing the homelink buttons because the way the circuit draws power. Kinda like the radio will still work for 10 mins after you shut the truck off. I cut the orange wire off the 5 plug harness (still connected to the Homelink side) and spliced it with my second wire. That second wire was run to my brake controller's illumination circuit. The factory trailer harness has a cable labeled illumination so I just vampire tapped that. If you don't have the trailering package, I'm sure someone here can tell you what pin to connect to. Mine has worked flawlessly since the install.

scottmoyer,
Thanks for the help. I remember reading your previous posts about your install, which helped. My problem was I bought a console from a 2001 that didn't have the autodim function. I had to cut the melted plastic away from my 2006 console so I could remove the SPDT (3 terminals) switch from the console. The 2001 console only had a SPST (2 terminals) switch. So, I couldn't have the lights come on when the door opened and turn them on independently when the truck was running, since the 2001 switch only had 2 wires. I could only run one of the hot leads, not both. I haven't made the change yet, but I tested it last night and it looks like everything will work now. Thanks Again.
