Flares or no?

My '99 'Ho has a slight tire-fender clearance problem... at *ahem* high speed, when I hit a bump, I get some tire rub. I've got some pretty tight shocks and springs on the truck, and the wheel offset is about right. So, I was contemplating whether to add the 4WD-style factory flares to give me a little more clearance. Here's a quick pshop of the front...

Looks like you need to roll your inner fenders.

I don't see how 4wd flares would work unless you plan on cutting the fenders and mounting the flares higher.:think:

I thought you allready did it when I saw the pic ,it looked like primer. Just roll the fenders like hdlocalboy said. Don't ruin that nice hoe with fender flares. Leave it like this.

I think the flares can look good on a 4x4 with meaty tires, but on a lowered 2wd with streets, no way. Looks great as it is man. Roll the fenders if u have to, but I wouldn't put flares on.

I was working from memory of my '96 'Ho... and that's been 10+ years. I looked at one in a parking lot last night and see that, not only do they mount across the fender as I thought, they also mount on the wheel opening as well... meaning I get no new clearance, and even lose 1/4" or so. To make them work, I'd have to gut the whole bottom of the flare and cut out the steel fender up to the flare mounting bolts. So... ain't gonna happen.

As for rolling the lip... long since been done. The truck is just too low up front for the static setup I've got. But I'm not prepared to go with bags at this point. This is my DD, and I already sink too much money into it as it is. I wonder if I could just do some kind of coil-over add-on to the shocks I have now to give it just a little more tension to reduce the dipping.

Actually, he posted a real pic. Mine was pshopped. I've actually already shaved the door, but I haven't shaved the fuel filler yet (haven't had time to complete the behind-the-taillight filler).



How about getting a narrower tire up front and save the existing fronts for the rears later on.

I started with 275/45's up front, then went to a narrower tire, which looked like hell, and so I'm back to the 275's. I could go shorter... but I'm already on the low side of filling the wheel well as it is.

DO NOT PUT THE FLARES ON! I had flares and took em off. wishing I bought a truck sometimes without. Now I'm stuck welding the rears, a lot of work. I would roll the fenders, get some bigger wheels like 22'z on, would look a lot Sicker* It's a Sport truck* Keep it Smooth & Street*
