I want to make a custom storage box on the left side of the steering column in the dash plastic, down by my legs. It would be made of metal, open with an electric button (solenoid operated?), close the same way, and when closed, just blend in with the dash, so it's hardly noticeable. Needs to be about 5 inches tall by 3 wide. Possible? Easy? If it's hard, how do I look for a place to do it for me?

Take the cupholder out of the center console, and store your drugs there.

It's not for drugs. It's a secure place to put my pistol though when I go to places I can't carry

what year truck?
some of those dash pieces down their have stuff behind them that can be moved. you could cut the dash and make them somewhat blend in.
Ill check my truck tonight and see what sort of space you have back there, but mine is a 1992.
Added: does it have to lock, and would you want it to open only if the ignition is on?

In Ohio its highly illegal to install a hidden compartment in any motor vehicle... that said i welded a strong box to the floor of my old regal for securing a firearm when i delivered pizza's. Since the box was out in the open on the passenger side floor board it wasnt able to be considered a "hidden compartment" Not a very aesthetically pleasing solution but it was my delivery car and not used for much else

If you have an Extended Cab pull those tubby's out of the back sides there is a ton of room in there. The can fit a 1 liter bottle of Bacardi per side.

seems like a lot of work. probably cheaper to just get your concealed liscence and put it in the door pocket so its still in reach

As stated earlier it would depend on what year your truck is. Different trucks have different things behind the dash panels. I know in my 06 there isn't much room. If I took out the metal plate that sits behind the lower dash piece then I would have tons of room, but it would expose my ignition harness, and bcm. So it depends on the truck, what year is yours?

theres a lot of obstructions behind that area in an OBS as well.
but like said before, if you have an OBS ext cab then those pockets in the back would be a great place to have a custom, lockable compartment.

Bolt a safe to the passenger floor panel. That will take care of your problem.

I thought about this on my way home, as my dash is apart right now... If you have an obs, you could build a box under the steering column. There is a panel there that has two screws in it and drops out. There are some wires and harnesses there, but it would give you enough room for a handheld and should still be out of the way when climbing in. This might give you an easy "bolt-in" option. You'll prolly have to fab some tab on top of it if you were to use the original setup like the panel has, but it wouldn't be too hard I don't think.

I've alwars thought about this too. Need somewhere to store my glock. I've thought about building a box that would slide out from under the drivers seat. That might be an option for you. I wanted to build it with a drawer on slides and then cut foam out to the shape of the pistol to keep it from sliding and then carpet the outside to match the carpet. It would be concealed and look factory.
