but... i did the K&N filter recharge last night and totally forgot which side was the dirty side. is it the part that faces up or the part that faces down in the air box so i know which to oil

my guess would be up, if dirt gets through to the bottom it aint working to well.. just a guess though

That is what I would say, clean and oil the dirty side and replace with that up. The dirt should be getting caught on the outside not the inside. Go roll in the grass, what side of your shirt gets grass stains the inside or the outside?

correct me if I'm wrong, but the bottom side of the filter is the dirty side. The air is getting sucked up into the box then it goes through the bottom of the filter, then out of the top of the filter through the MAF screen and into the intake tube.

At least that's how it looks on my '03 5.3L.
