I had to recently (yesterday) go pick up a new steering column for my 85 since I broke the old one  Anyways I ended up getting one out of a 89 or 90 square body Suburban. It is the same column just the newer style wheel. But it didn't have a key in it to try everything out, but I got it home, put in the old ignition switch origional to my 85 but here's where I ran into a problem. It's all back together, but with the key in accessory position everything seems normal, but when the key is switched to the run position the shifter locks in park. I can shut it off, shift to neutral, start it up and it will lock again in the neutral position. Anyone have any ideas or should I just bite the bullet and go buy yet another column?

take it apart and tinker around before you buy another column... see how it works.. and why its doing what its doing...

you screwed something up in the lock pin/lock plate area. tear it down and see why its locking there. i'm guessing something isnt aligned properly. did it go back together pretty decent or did you have a hard time with it? what did you break in your original column that was so bad that you had to replace it? if you just tore it down to the ignition cylinder on a column you bought to fix a loose tilt mechanism, you were like 4 screws and 2 tilt pins away from fixing the old column.

I just tore it apart, but nothing seems to be catching or anything out of the ordinary. I'm replacing it because I had the old column out while swapping some interior and some other misc. jobs, and it fell off of the bench breaking the housing.
