Don't really know where to post this but I wanted the classic owners opinion. So i have the crate motor sitting in the garage and I was tossing around the idea of painting it. I've seen the engine enamel spray paint at the auto parts store and the Chevy orang looked pretty tempting. Wondering if anyone here has used it and how did it turn out...:dunno:

The normal paint says its good to 500* but I have seen it fail at well under that. The better 1000* stuff actually lasts from what I've seen.

Along with ANY kind of paint job it is in the prep work.
This CANNOT be stressed enough.
You want the block to bare metal.

A mild sand blast would be best, if not use a strong stripper, and LOTS of wiping with paint prep solution afterwards would be required.

You would want to get some high temp etching paint to spray first. When you can see a nice covering with it, let it dry 24 hours.
Then use 800*+ paint for the block. I have seen many block sides come undone because they only used 500* paint and did not account for the heat of the headers.

2-3 LIGHT coats of color choice allowing 7-10 minutes between to flash. Then 2-3 more medium coats to color to liking.

Allow to dry 24-36 hours before messing with it.

I cleaned my long block thoroughly with brake cleaner and a wire brush, and then shot it with Dupli-Color high temp engine paint primer and then high temp Chevy orange engine paint. It's holding up well.

I have also done this with lasting results.

I got my block, oil pan, and heads sent through an acid wash before painting and used the +1000* paint/clear on it and it turned out really good.

Your new crate engine is already black? If its new you should be ok with a coat or two over it. Use the high temp with a clear coat.

Yeah, most of it's black. I'm not looking at it now but I know the end of the heads are bare. Along with some other areas. I've seen a tech article on painting a crate and they just cleaned it up and painted. Do I need to clear it after primer and paint?

Degreaser and a brush, painted it the original 'Pontiac' blue. It's been a few years and still holds strong!

it was a 3 part enamel from Mopac Van/Calgary/Edmonton
its held up real well so far...like the look of the white but am torn between the black and its ability to throw of heat quicker than white...up here heats not to much of a issue but if l were in Texas ect woulda definitley gone black
went with the white to spot leaks and have somethin diffrent

figuried i'd join the party. on mine I started with a bare hot tanked block and used brake cleaner to remove any hand oils and grease from assembly then shot it with some 1000 degree white enamel and they after it became tacky shot it with duplicolor cherry red I think it was and it came out awesome
