When I bought my truck the factory temp guage would just stick all the way to the right. Any ideas on what causes this before I go ahead and start buying new parts like a new guage?
Thanks

I just bought a new one on jcwhitney. I have an 82 and mine bearly moves up, even when is at normal running temp. I figured, why mess with the old one, and it'll look cool too.

urm, if im not mistaken, thats a result from a short to ground.
basically the gauge has 3 wires, power, ground and the signal. the temp sensor is a resistor that changes resistance (NTC) and as a result the resistance gets lower and lower as the truck gets hotter and hotter. so from what you gave, youve got a busted wire somewhere between the gauge and connector to the sending unit. check around the sending unit as that is gona be the 1st place to start. it could also mean a busted sensor... check it with a ohm meter.... if its a one wire deal, probe the black test lead on the block, clean surface, and the red probe on the temp sender. the ohms should read really high when cold. if it reads super low like .1 or something the sensor is shorted.

I had the same problem, along with a leaky radiator. Since then I have bought a new motor, new radiator, and will definitely fix the gauge.:nopity:
