I have a red 1990 Chevy 1500 4x4. In April my trans(auto) went out(3rd and 4th are completely gone), so i parked ol' red and bought a little Nissan for the gas mileage. Now I am starting to miss my big truck. Alot. The engine has 180,000 miles on it, a blown rear main seal, and its been through hell, so i want to put a new engine and trans in it. What should i put in it? I am considering a built 350, a 383, or a 400 small block. The truck will be used for driving maybe 2 or 3 times a week, towing, and occasional four wheeling and hot rodding. I am probably going to put an automatic trans back in it, but i was just wondering how hard it would be to put a manual trans in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Whatever you decide on dont forget to factor in the cost of conversion. Not to mention the frustration and time. You could just drop in another stock junk yard motor/tranny and be done with it. Check out craiglist.org also. If you get a short block or long block remanufactured or new you may not be able to bolt up your stock oem stuff. Think about it, the money adds up very quickly. If you were happy with your old truck just have your motor & tranny rebuilt.
