I need to get a good toolbox, I've got my eye on a 42" Atlas model, I'll get it as soon as I have a garage to put it in. For the time being, though, I have tools here, there and everywhere, I've taken over a large chunk of my parents' basement with tools (including an extremely large, extremely nice SK toolset) and my buddy's garage with an air compressor, set of air tools, full 18v powertool set, two socket sets (Craftsman 145-pc all 6-point and Ace ~120 piece set, plus some miscellaneous additional sockets here and there).
One thing I've found is that one can never have too many ratchets, in particular 3/8" drive in various lengths from stubby to extra long, as that's the most commonly used size. I've got a half dozen quarter inch ones, another half dozen or so half inch drive, and then a dozen or so 3/8. A good set of extensions helps, too.
The local Sears loves me. I usually don't spend less than $200 when I'm in there. That said, they have a good clearance section, and they sell off a lot of refurbished or scratch and dent items. In fact, just down the way, we have an entire Sears scratch and dent warehouse.
One toolset I'd highly recommend is the Craftsman "next generation/thin profile" ratchets. They fit your hand better, they're 60-tooth rather than 36, and they're very well made. My girlfriend got them for me last Christmas, I'm hoping this Christmas will bring the new SK ProGun impact- 1200 ft-lbs!

26 in gray Craftsman top and bottom with ball bearing drawers and the NAPA auto tech. freshman set. I know most are going to say "What the hell, NAPA are you kidding me?" When I got the same set for $600 less than Matco (which is made by the same company as NAPA) and $1200 less than Snap On why not?

i would venture to say removal and installation of nuts and bolts, but that's just a guess.
you have 3 drive sizes at least, 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2". then you have the 3 basic depths, shallow, mid, and deep. then add 2 different measurement systems, standard and metric. to cover all your bases, you'll need at least 18 bars of sockets.
