Magnaflow muffler advice needed..

After some research I've decided on a 14" magnaflow muffler, but I can't find much information about the differences between the oval and round mufflers. From a lot of sound clips and videos online, the round mufflers sound a lot louder and seem to have more bite.. Which is what I'm looking for. Can anyone explain the differences between round/oval mufflers and give me some advice on which would be better if I'm wanting to change the muffler only and put on a turn down? Also what size round muffler would be best? Thanks

hey man, this past friday i just installed a 14" magnaflow muffler with a turndown by my axle. sounds freaking awesome and still amazes me when i start the truck, i have no video, so i cant post how it sounds, and my truck is recently lowered, so i cant shoot pics either. I had a flowmaster super 40 single in dual out with two turndowns by the rollpan, but could seriously feel like i was losing some low end torque. so i went with the same setup your talkign about. and a 14" is good for yours, they say on magnaflows the lower the better supposedly. The 22",18"
and 14" are the ones i heard of. i didnt want stock, but i love mine now. i will post the exact site from ebay of what my muffler looks like man. hope this helps. and oh yea, i got back my low end torque and i love my magnaflow. i was and always had flowmasters before, this is my first magnaflow, and i like it a lot.

What does that mean.. Only for racing applications? Bad on gas? Not meant for muffler-only swap?

Yeah I saw your post but I didn't want to involve myself in the subsequent **** storm.. Good info though. I noticed that was a 2.5/2.5.. What size pipes to you have running from the cat to the muffler? If not stock..

well, those 2 a-holes have been banned, so its all good now. I wanna say its a 3" from the off-road y pipe. i have long tubes and the ory.. so i wanna say 3" into the 2.5" 14" Magnaflow then out 2.5" with a turndown... i really, really like it man. and if your like me, you will like it too

The difference between the round and oval Magnaflow mufflers has nothing to do with straight through design - both are straight through. The difference has to do with how much acoustical suppression material can be inserted into the case. For the same length muffler case, the oval muffler will be a bit quieter, because there is more acoustical suppression material applied around the core.

To answer "which muffler is best" is very subjective...depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you want louder, go with a shorter round muffler. If you want deeper and mellower, go with a longer oval muffler.

My suggestion to get the most performance, is to get the cat-back made for your truck, but I don't know your money situation, or your specific needs out of your exhaust...
I run all stainless bolt on Magnaflow from the manifolds back, hi-flow cats and all...

This is the cat-back for your truck, if nothing else it may help you decide on a muffler only decision based on what is used here...

Yeah I've looked at all the magnaflow cat back systems and their different mufflers, but I'm only interested in a muffler right now and I wanted to make sure I got the best one.

Does anyone know if there are specific fitment issues for a muffler-only replacement, like a specific center/left/right entrance or exit?

The muffler in the cat-back appears to be a center in, offset out, unless it's just an optical illusion...

center/offset (or offset/center depending on how you look at it) on the pictured muffler. Since Magnaflow uses a straight-through design their mufflers can be installed either direction (center/offset = offset/center).

As far as doing a muffler-only replacement, look under your vehicle prior to purchasing a new muffler of any sort, that way, you'll know what you need.

i agree for the most part, you are always correct. i must mention when i called magnaflow when i was shopping, i was told they are the EXACT SAME.. round and oval, the designs are only for SHAPE / FITMENT purposes is what i was told.. they are made to sound the same. BOTH would perform the same way. so i got the round muffler, and i LOVE it!

You can buy the pacesetter offroad y pipe or have an exhaust shop do it. For $90-110 you can get the pacesetter one, bolts up to headers and factory exhaust location. It would probably cost just as much having it done at an exhaust shop, maybe more.

Okay thanks. When they say 4 or 5 inch round, does that mean diameter? If so, what would be the best size?

So if the cat just FELL off for some reason, it would be o.k it dont screw anything up fuel mpg or anything?
