View Full Version : Opinions: Coustic / MA Audio / Phoenix Gold / Dayton
Just looking for opinions that anyone has about the brands in the subject line.
I am primarily interested in amps and 6.5 speakers, and any experience with them
Thanks a bunch!

Dayton speakers are of excellent quality. Excellent choice for the price point, especially the reference line. Phoenix gold xenon line is also very good, not sure about the rest of the line. Coustic had very good stuff back in the day especially the design reference line (dr series). Ma audio I have no clue maybe others will chime in on some of this.

phoenix gold Rsd will be your best bet. They are at a good price point and if you search for installation how to's on here you will get your moneys worth!

Why???
The Dayton's are far, far superior drivers.

Without knowing what daytons he speaks of...i can only guarantee him a good choice by choosing the RSd comp set. If properly installed and tuned they are a great sounding set. I've used them before.
Again...this is my opinion only...according to the OP this is what he wanted. I guess we need to explain to you in scientific terms why HE should get them so YOU can be happy. It happens on every single type of post like this.

He asked about brands and you shared your limited experience on one specific set. As a brand, Dayton smokes the others. Even their baseline speakers are better than the drivers in the Rsd set which makes your response even more amusing. If he steps up to the Dayton refs, then the differential is orders of magnitude.

You do it over and over again :(
I also never said Daytons were way better than anything else, just answered the OP's question for HIS list.

only red flag with dayton is the rs180 can't go much above 1600hz from what i've heard. of course as long as the tweeter can extend down low enough it shouldn't matter. still a stretch though and it's generally a good idea to stay away from aluminum cones in a 2-way in favor of something more forgiving like paper, poly, or kevlar. just my experience with all the drivers i've chewed through.

MA = Bleh...
PG = As stated, the Xenon amps lineup is quite nice.
Coustic = I've yet to actually use... One day, I'll probably be using one of their X-overs though.
Dayton = I have nothing but good to say about them... And if you use PartsExpress, their customer service is excellent.

had an xm6 once and while it was versatile it wasn't that great. the memphis x03 that replaced it was a MUCH more solid unit. never once gave me any crap like the coustic did. when the coustic crapped out on me it popped the picofuse in a brand new pioneer 7800.

The only experience I have with coustic is my XM5E crossover excellent piece. The daytons are very good speakers but I prefer morels if you can find them even though I am currently using phoenix gold zero point components in my kicks and phoenix gold XS 8" in my doors

The XM6 is sort of a joke. The DX28 and XM7 were much better. Classic though that there aren't too many brands that are consistent over their product lines and over time. Too bad.
