Cool! I experimented with flames in PS way back in 1996, but have only done the "firestorm" in my sig since then. I may have to "upgrade" those flames (need a new sig anyway).

I use a technique where I paint some red lines with a soft brush set about %50/%50. Then I use the Smudge tool to bunch up some edges and draw out little wisps to create the actual shape of the flames. Then I select the flames and make a channel, which I then choke back with levels. With a selection made from this channel I fill with yellow on a new layer. The same process is used for a white highlight layer.

Might sound complicated, but it's really not. And the principal is much the same as the above posted tutorial. Granted, this method is more manual, but I just thought I'd share. And I'm happy to explain in more detail if anyone is interested.
