View Full Version : Kirk's truck
Well, I started installing the 6" RCX lift tonight. Unfortunately, I didn't get much done. Between my neighbor who came over not knowing anything about trucks, especially 4x4's, and me needing to go to the parts store which is now closed, I'm gonna have to call it a night. I didn't get any decent pics. I'll post up the best of what I've got in a few minutes, but I can't borrow a real camera until tomorrow.
Hopefully I get a lot done tomorrow, but I have to work in the morning, and I have to go to a cousin's birthday party tomorrow night. At least I have all day Sunday to finish the lift. But I probably won't have it driveable until Tuesday, since I have to go get my tires mounted on my aluminum wheels (I gave up on doing it myself, didn't want to tear up the aluminum wheels).
Current specs on my truck are:
2001 RCSB 4x4 W/T - 4.3 V6, NV3500, floor shift transfer case - RC leveling kit cranked 3" (not recommended), 3" BL, 5.13 gears, 39.5x13.5 IROK Radials on stock 16" wheels, Flowmaster exhaust, K&N drop in filter, Escalade gauge cluster with blue LED's, blue LED's under dash, Sony CD player.

None of the other pics turned out good at all, but I'll have a real camera tomorrow, and take a lot.
holy ****.... those are some serious tires, wow
how do you like that 4.3L? (i thought it was 4.8l?) have they got better since the mid 90's? i had an S10 for a year or so with the 4.3 in it and i have sworn of any thing less then 8 cyclinders cause of that engine (engines i should say, i went threw a few in that truck)

Do you have no interest in having the wheels wider?

The 4.3 is a good engine, just not enough power for a fullsize truck.

I'm putting the tires on some 16x8's.

Sure, I wish the tires were wider, but I do like them. They grip good offroad, and they do pretty good on road too.
However, when I wear these out, I'm getting some wide Boggers and black DC-1's.
bigwhite93
10-11-2008, 10:43 PM
I'm getting some wide Boggers
I know they kick ass offroad but if this truck is a DD I'd defiantly consider getting different tires sense the boggers wear out so quickly on the pavement. Or, if you have the money get the boggers and set of something like BFG A/T's and use the A/T's for DD driving and swap the boggers on for offroading.

so whats the point of installing a lift kit when you already know that you're going to cut all the crap out of it and put good stuff in it? sounds to me like you just wasted $1076.

when he gets ready for sas he can sell his lift, so it wouldnt be total loss.

I need a little more clearance over the 40's for now, and it'll be a while until I can get started on the SAS. Plus, my angles will be better with the lift, so maybe my IFS will last a little longer.

Just an update. I didn't get anything done yesterday because I had to work later than I expected to. So, I had some places to go this morning, and got a late start. Now I've gotta go to AAP to get a balljoint tool, since my balljoints are stuck.

yes, they are just 2'' or 3'' pucks. the bolts for a nbs are 12x1.75x120 (metric, roughly 4.5'') you need a 7.5''-8'' for a 3'' b/l

If you buy one for a NBS it will have the bumper brackets, steering extension, and everything else needed. They're cheap, just buy the right one IMO.

Update:
I didn't really get a chance to do much tonight, but I got the mount cut off the front diff, ground the cooling fins down a little to clear the frame, and got the diff in it. That's about all I had time for tonight. But it looks like the hard part is over. Everything else should be easy, and I'll get my tires swapped over to the aluminum wheels ASAP. If everything goes as planned, I'll be driving it this weekend.

I've heard their new knuckle kit is solid; check out SilveradoLQ9, he is running one on his black NBS out on the dunes, it takes quite a bit of beating and he says it's held up without issues so far. Here's the thread;

Pics are uploading now. In a few minutes, I'm gonna eat, then go work on it some more.
I had to take the diff back out, to grind down the cooling fins a little more so I could tighten everything down. But I got it back in, both crossmembers back in (took the front crossmember out to get the diff out easier) and both LCA's on. Now I've gotta tighten all the crossmember and diff mounts, put the knuckles on, tighten the LCA's, and drop the torsion bar crossmember (I'll do that tomorrow when it's light outside since I have to drill holes in the frame).
And so far, I'm impressed with this lift kit. This is the first kit I've ever installed/helped install that everything lined up like it's supposed to. And the installation has been pretty easy, I just haven't had much time to work on it.

I'm almost done with the front. Just gotta drop the torsion bar crossmember, install the brakes and tighten the ball joints and LCA's, and hook up the front diff actuator. That shouldn't take long at all, and blocks don't take long to swap out, so I should have it finished tomorrow. And I'm gonna try to get the tires swapped to my 16x8 wheels tomorrow, just gotta find someplace that isn't scared to mount 40's. And I don't trust my 84 to make it to 4WP in marietta and back home to get the tires swapped.

I've gotta wait for my uncle to get home to finish the other side, since he is driving the only vehicle we have that isn't taken apart for some reason, and I need to go to the parts store. Finished the front, doing the rear tomorrow. I've got a few pics uploading right now, and tomorrow I'll go someplace to take some decent shots of the truck. Overall, I'm surprised at how easy this lift kit was to install. Everything lined up perfectly, and went smoothly the whole install. I only measured the left front fender tonight, and it was at 50", so I gained 4" over my leveling kit, and I didn't even crank up this kit. Tomorrow I'll check the other side too, and level it out side to side, and it won't take but a few minutes to lift the rear, then I'll have an update and good daylight pics.
I'm also gonna try to see how much it'll flex tomorrow (gotta find someplace that I can try flexing it). I don't have a swaybar, so it should flex pretty good for IFS.
Pics in a minute.

BTW, anyone who is planning on installing this lift, everything the instructions said was a 19mm, was actually an 18mm:whatever: . Other than that, the instructions are good, and the installation is easy.

Top flex very much, I think I'd still need the trimming. Probably not as much on the rear fenders though, and probably not quite as much on the front bumper either. I think any smaller tire probably wouldn't require much at all, if any sheetmetal trimming.

Looks good, a job well done.
Blackknight, I don't have the kicker braces. I didn't even see the extra stuff until I had already ordered the kit. I do plan on ordering them eventually.
2WDmadness, one of the mount has to be cut off the front diff, and the cooling fins have to be ground a little to clear the frame. Also, one of the mounts for a stock crossmember must be cut off (doesn't matter, since they give you new crossmembers).
Rednk123, I gained 4" over what I had before. So really, I got a full 7" of just suspension lift, plus the 3" body lift. So the front is 10" over stock height with the RC keys, and I left it as low as possible with the RC keys (I couldn't find my stock keys).
Thanks for the compliments guys, I'll have a few more pics up in a few minutes. And DarkCharisma, I got a pic of the angles on flat ground for ya.

Yeah, I left the sway bar off to try and make it flex a little more. The rear tires barely rub when it's flexed a lot (one tire has to be off the ground for it to rub), and the fronts only rub barely at full left lock.

Lookin good man. For those of you looking into this kit, one downfall i just recently noticed is that Rough Country has made the kicker bars an "extra" $90 option. And it looks like they have removed some of the metal on the new subframe parts. My kit is only 4 months old, and my subframes are 1 solid piece. and also my kit came with kicker bars.
If your are gonna do any type of offroading i think the kicker bars are a must, and the fact that Rough country sells their kit without kicker bars kinda scares me.
kinda cheap that Rough country did that. but they still make a sweet kit.

Subframe to Frame "crossmember." its really more of a bar than a crossmember but yea. you get the idea.
My kicker bars attach to the rear subframe and go into holes on a crossmember near the tranny i believe.
heres a pic, the kicker bars are the bars on the inside of the torsion bars. u can see where theyre attached to the subframe and where they attach to my trucks frame.

To put it simply, I'm a dumb@ss, and did the cutting and grinding on the wrong front diff in it when I lifted it, so I don't have matching gear ratios. But I wanted to hurry up and get the truck together, so I just haven't swapped diffs yet.

03-17-2009, 05:30 PM
man your truck looks sweet in your new sig Kirk! so did you decide on the 6.0 or is that just people dreaming aloud? what about changing your thinking and considering a Cummins 4BT? a 4 cyl displacement keeps it light(ish) and it puts out tons of power (namely torque) and would get better fuel mileage than your 4.3 did when the truck was stock.
I'd like to have a diesel, but for my needs, I don't think I'd really benefit much from a diesel like the 4BT. I mean, it would be cool, and the torque would be awesome, but fuel mileage isn't my biggest concern, and other than the mileage, I don't really see much benefit for my use. If I towed or hauled a lot though, yeah, I'd definitely want a diesel. Anyways, I'm most likely going with a 6.0, and I've got a few ideas for getting more power out of it:rocking: I know I won't be able to keep it stock for long:D
Right now, it's looking like the engine swap will come before the SAS, so hopefully it won't be too long until I have a V8:cool:

i seen your truck in four wheel magazine today!!!
Ok, updating this a little, since I'm working on something non-SAS related. This is keeping me busy since it's taking a while with the SAS.
I'm working on my interior. Yep, time to start working on that cheap W/T interior, and make it my own. Here's the plan:
Build a console to hold a 12" sub and mount an amp or two on it.
Build new a-pillars to hold some tweeters. I may mount them somewhere else for now, just because I want my components in.
Phoenix Gold RSD65 components.
And leather seats:cool:
I'm also currently trying to get a 12" RE Audio SE series. And an amp. But I don't have them yet.
I've just started on the console/box, if I make some progress on it tomorrow I'll post up a pic or two. And according to the email I got today, the components will be here next Tuesday.
Overall, I'm hoping to just have it a little nicer, a little more comfortable, and have a lot better quality sound system than stock, without spending a fortune. To save some money, and keep it cheap, I'm buying what I can used. Actually, the only thing I'm buying new is the components.

Overall, I'm hoping to just have it a little nicer, a little more comfortable, and have a lot better quality sound system than stock, without spending a fortune. To save some money, and keep it cheap, I'm buying what I can used. Actually, the only thing I'm buying new is the components.

sounds great! I wish I could do the same :D minus the leather
but I agree with Tim :D
Thanks guys:D
And Shawn, thanks for all the help with my noob audio questions:aniteef: Gotta run to Home Depot to pick up some wood glue in a little while, can't do much on the console without it. I've started figuring out how I'm gonna make the a-pillars though. Which of my 2 designs I build depends on the overall size of the tweeters themselves. So I can't actually start on them until Tuesday.
And the amp I'm gonna use for the my sub is a Rockford Fosgate Punch 700:head:
Still gotta get an amp for the mids, but that's gotta wait a little bit due to lack of cash:aniteef:

Shawn, you're tempting me:read:
Right now, looking at subs before I get a second amp though. I haven't heard back from the guy about the RE sub I want yet.

 I know. Its a tempting offer.
Somebody needs to get on the ball about that sub. :teddy:
Yeah, I'll give him another day or two, then I'll start seriously looking for other subs.
I may just get this (http://www.dealercostcaraudio.com/reaudiosr12.aspx) if I can't get the sub I was planning on getting.

I don't know what I'm doing either. :looking: If it catches on fire its not my fault :looking:. If its badass, well you can blame that on me :D.

I'm gonna have to see if Sterling will help me with install. Therefore, if/when it catches on fire, it's Sterlings fault:D
If it's badass, I'm blaming both of you.
Anyways, I'm going to Home Depot tomorrow to get a new sheet of MDF. And probably gonna pick up some fiberglass for the a-pillar pods.
Edit:
Components are here!:rocking: Pics in a little while.:D
As promised, pics of the components. Nothing much, but I know y'all are gonna be bitching if I get something and don't post pics:D
