Ok, so I just put on two original flowmaster 40's on my 5.7 tahoe. It was put on yesterday and I got the tips angled at pretty much a 45 out the back on either side. So it's basically a true dual setup without cutting the cats. I was bummed because I can't hear the exhaust at all driving. It's hardly any louder than my stock muffler. It's pretty decently loud on the outside. Will it get louder on the inside as the mufflers are "broken in"?

this bothers you????:whatever:
I cut my drone-master 50 series off and got a magnaflow because the drone and rumble inside the cab made people not want to ride with me. Try dumping it under the bed, you'll be sure to hear it then. And flowmasters get a lot louder over the first couple hundred miles, doesnt make sense and I dont know why but they do.

Chamber mufflers are quite when they are first installed. It took my Thrush welded muffler about a month to get loud. But I'm going to go back to a glasspack because I want it louder.

If you want real results, change the catalytic converter assembly...
See the link in my sig for the part number...

You dont want it loud on the inside,be carefull what you wish for. They will get louder over time. Roll your windows down.

With a catted exhaust and 2 mufflers it's not going to be very loud especially at first. Once they break in and you still want it louder then remove the cats and see how you like it. At that point it should be loud enough for you. If not, then you might want to sell the mufflers and go with a di/do and run 1 muffler on a catless exhaust, that should be plenty loud enough for you.

yeah, it is all true, i had the same deal. I got my flowmaster 40 about a month ago, but its a delta flow which is supposed to be quieter inside. I got a lot louder in a couple hundred miles inside and out. When i first put it in, it was barely louder than the stock muffler. Give it time, it will get louder. As for the inside, mine is slightly louder at all rpms, but at 1600 and like 2400 or so it really resonates. Like they said, be careful, it could get annoying. I also have stock cat which im sure makes it much quieter than it could be.

Yeah, be careful what you wish for in flowmasters. We had two in our 1966 383 stroker drag truck, and it droned so bad, it rattled your teeth. We had those blowmasters replaced with dynomax bullets and it is MUCH louder on the outside, but does not drone at all, if any.

I have Flowmaters 40 and they have probably close to 30,000 miles on them and one day I just noticed they seem to be getting louder. I also have two mufflers and stock cats.

Yall think it drones bad inside? Try having no cat or muffler exit directly under the cab, now that's bad. I drove with ear muffs made for viewing Nascar races and the windows up all the time so I wouldn't go deaf. After running my truck for months like that I think having a Flowmaster 40 dumped before the axle with no cat won't be too loud for me.

Try waiting a week for your Magnaflow to come in the mail, and driving with longtubes to dual 2.5" exhaust y'd to a single 3" stopping at the axle. Suprisingly little drone at highway speeds, but unlock it in 4th going up a hill and you don't stand a chance if a cop goes by the other way. :aniteef:

The '66 has no cats, 3ft of piping to blowmasters dumped under the cab. You think yours is loud...

My FM 40s on my GP drone pretty good inside. I'm going to try replacing my resonator see if that drops the drone.

yea i had a 40 series delta flow SI/SO on my old truck. it sounded ok at first but got louder as time went on. didnt sound bad at all. but i wanted louder after a while so i got my cat cut out and had him move the muffler under the bed. both times were with a turndown right before the axle. the drone wasnt bad with a cat and even after removin the cat it still wasnt too bad but you could definitely tell it was louder.

I drove today without my radio cranked, and I have to say my chamber muffler has gotten louder since I had it installed about two months ago.

Where are you at? I wanna hear this truck. How about an 87 C10 with a built 4bbl driving with just longtubes? That was earsplitting, gave me a bad headache.

You'd be surprised how big of a difference the tailpipes make. Cut the tailpipes off right at the muffler making sure you leave nothing and you'll love the sound.

like previously posted.. cut the dumps off. the quick crimped turn on the dumps take away the flowmaster sound and make the exhaust flutter. as soon as i cut my dumps off my truck sounded amazing!!

Though I'm not the guy you quoted, I drove to the shop with open headers on my truck in sig and drove back with a single 3" straight pipe that stopped at the axle. The difference blew me away, I enjoy the straight right now. I figure the free flowing headers and ***** motor mellow it out quite a bit.

Then why do they get louder after time? it was just a figure of speech to relay the idea that they get louder over time.. obviously there's not anything to actually "break in"

:word:
with a glass pack, or any muffler that has fiberglass packing is going to get louder overtime as the fiberglass blows out. I have to repack my dirtbikes muffler every year or so...

NE ks. We cut the flowmasters off and it's 100x better in the cab, we switched to dynomax bullets, so it is like 2-3x louder on the outside, but does not drone NEAR as bad. The pulse from the droning would make your ears bleed. It was BAD. I'll see about charging the battery on it and taking a vid, but it may max out the camera's speaker.
383 stroker, cam specs are 24x/25x .5xx/.5xx

Sounds good, maybe we can meet up sometime. If the price is right, i'm gonna sell my 95 and buy the 87. I'd rather build the motor myself but it needs trans work and a new rar end so that's plenty for me.

They don't get louder they just get more irritating after the cool wears off them. Is this on a Tahoe? You could turn your turn downs into turn ups to make it louder in the cab. Just kidding!!!!

BINGO!
I had a 2-chamber Flowmaster (40-series) on my 75 C10 when I was in highschool. Day I got it installed, I didn't know squat, so I said "Just give me a flowmaster!"
Next day, it didn't sound any damn different, so I ASWELL crawled under to see if it really WAS a flowmaster..sure enough.
Well, that weekend, I went to show it off to my friends and they said "Dude, if you want it loud, cut & dump it" So that's what I did...cut the tailpipe completely off and put a turn-down on it...BAM, instant loud.
Then I grew up, and realized I didn't want loud exhaust...just wanted exhaust that flowed well.

I do have multiple trucks, selling my Sierra for a little 4cyl truck for the insurance and mileage. My Silverado will stay loud but the little 4cyl truck will get a turbo muffler so it flows well but is still as loud as stock.

The baffles in the flowmasters can warp from the heat which creates a louder tone over time I have heard...

I've been running my thrush welded chamber muffler for about 4 months now with a full exhaust, and it's gotten louder it seems. Not straight pipe loud but now it has a nice muscle truck rumble to it that will turn heads when i stomp on it.

I have a 96 ECSB 5.7. I left the 2 cats and went into a DI/DO super 40, 2.5 inch pipe, out the sides, with 3 inch, 12 inch long mitred tips. I am still waiting for it to be loud outside. I love the tone and sound, but more volume please. The drone inside is loud in town, and drowns out to tolerable at highway speeds. I like the drone loud in town, cause it fools me makes me think its loud outside, but its really not. I guess my next step is to replace the cats with that jegs pipe kit. But after that I don't know, maybe a new muffler.
As far as dumping it, how and where do you dump it to keep the fumes from the cab?
