View Full Version : How to dress up a wine/burgundy interior 96 Tahoe

Even though I love the Tahoe I picked up last week, it is a color combination I was never fond of. It has the same color outside as inside, a wine/burgundy color.

I really like the exterior, and the interior is ok but is definitely needing a couple of subtle tweaks here and there. The interior physically is in amazing shape. Just need something to help break it up a bit.

Anyone have any recommendations on what to start with?

Thanks,

lbrowne

You could start by putting led white bulbs in the dome lights and under the dash, maybe wire some red leds in under the dash as well, not sure if you would want these or not. I've got the same red interior and I've often toyed with the idea of having a shop paint interior pieces a white or cream to complement the red (such as the doorhandles, the plastic oval around the handle itself, the plastic column with the window/lock/electric mirror controls, and even possibly the vents. I've never seen it done before but in my head I would imagine it could be sharp, its just this is my dd and I would not like to mess up anything inside - no big deal cause any of these parts are easy to get, but still It has held me back. Other than that, you can paint the dash bezel itself, add a touch of billet with knobs, shifters, buttons, etc. Your best bet is to take a look at truck magazines that are heavy into customization and maybe you will find something that helps. I'm in the same boat, unsure what to do lest I mess things up

Not much into crazy lighting, but I would like some LEDs in the domelights. Good idea..

I would think cream/off white would be too loud. What about a aluminum color.... like silver or something? I did pieces of my TA's interior with silver, everyone that see it loves it. It's a black on black car.

I was thinking of a woodgrain kit, but I wouldn't know whether to go with a dark looking wood or light color...

You said your interior is in mint, which is good. But just wondering, I've seen some interiorsof this color where everything is a different color(vents, glove box, etc). Luckily all mine are color matched perfect, only in some light is there any color difference, but if your one the few in that boat with purplish vents and maroon dashes I would start with that. And why I would like the cream/off white ish is because I am going to paint my truck two tone in ten or so years. Paint on it now is flawless but it would be nice to have the interior match as well. For the dome lights, I am putting in white from superbrightleds.com, putting in a colored bulb up there is tacky and I'd rather be able to see when I need it. I'm sure your aluminum silver paint scheme inside you have planned would be nice as well, you could get a billet shifter and vent and power controls that match it, could be a really good lookin interior. Do you plan on painting the parts yourself or take to a shop?

My tahoe has the same color interior in cloth. The truck is white and I hate this combo, so my plan is to dye every plastic piece in black with SEM dye. The carpet will be replaced with black carpet, headliner in black suede, door inserts in black suede, and the seats will be black leather with black suede inserts. The truck will eventually be painted black with everything color matched.

I would paint the pieces myself - I did the ones in the TA myself. That's been done for several years now and has held up great.

All my dash pieces and interior panels in the Tahoe are all the same color tone - no fading anywhere.

Nickl011 I was trying to picture how certain pieces of the interior would look painted black, that could come out very well.

Did you use a spray gun to do the interior or just rattle can? And yeah black would look good, bbut don't you think it would be a pita to clean?? Even the red is okay, but still shows dirt. I'd think black would be bad to clean, just my opinion. As well, what is that sem stuff you are talking about? Is it similar to colorbond?

I've seen guys using SEM in other threads to dye dash pieces - turned out good with good prep.

Black is a pain to keep clean, although it's not too bad if it's on select interior pieces.

I used a rattle can on my TA's interior pieces, and put on a rattle can clearcoat too.

Here's a crappy photo of what I did, this was before I did the 3 center vent rings but the lgihting in the pic shows it best:

Here's much later with a deck and center vent rings done:

That looks realy good man, and I will definitely search on that sem product, but with ratte can I have found you can't get as good of a gloss with spray can, at least in my opinion with canadian tire products. Haha

I never used SEM, someone else mentioned that. But from what I seen from other people's results it looks to be the real deal.

You can get a good gloss depending on what you use, but I wanted a thin coat to keep the texture of the dash piece, I didn't want it to be a mirror finish.

My interior is also the Red/Maroon. I would like to change it and paint it black. And when I do I will use SEM. I think that would look awesome. It also has a White exterior, but I want to paint it Silver.

Nevermind about the SEM, I now know what your talking about, found two cans in the garage. But 22.00+ a spraybomb :o its up there, but is specifically matched. Have you looked at a full katzkin leather job, my friends dad has their medium feel leather in his black 98 with the same maroon interior as ours. It has black outside and a burgundy inside on the seat, looks absolutely amazing.

Okay I have some pics, but haven't It will take absolutely ever to upload to photobucket from my blackberry. Ahah. So you will just have to wait until tonight when I can get onto my computer. I'm sure you'll like the look of it and I'd imagine you could find a shop to do it for less than a full katzkin, provided its good quality leather

Yep! Its a nice truck too. Its almost identical to yours, but not quite. Its owned by my buddys dad and he is almost 47. Xcabsb, visor, rounded cowl hood from reflexions, 3" bl w gap guards, 33" bfg ats on16" ar nitros, gibson exhaust, k+n intake, yep. Pretty nice for an oldtimer with 185 thou. Just no supercharged :)

So would you want to smooth and paint the interior? That wine color makes the interior look good IMO when painted body color. I have used that SEM on about everything I own and its great stuff! My interior in my 91 was burgundy and every panel was different color so its all black now. Im doing the center section of the dash in charcoal suede and already done the headliner and replaced the carpet to grey to break up the black. Also added 95+ leather seats.

That's amazing work man!! Looks really great. I would like to do that color scheme that I posted, but I'm not too sure. I would love to paint the lower part of my truck a pearl white and keep this red, just do it along the bodyline with pin striping (with some sort of tribal theme of somesort). And then try that pearl white on the seatd, but I dontknow. Black would be nice too like those seats..

Looks good. One day I'd like to change my burgundy to black too. Don't get me wrong I like the burgundy. Maybe because mine is still one color. I wish the OBS trucks came with a black interior.

Toclcl, those seats look awesome. Even on a burgundy ext truck the black would go nice inside with a two-tone scheme. That setup reminds me of the 03 Grand Prix GTP 40th anniversary interior.

I had thought of something from Katzkin because they make awesome products however they go for quite the $$$. However you definitely get what you paid for there. Thanks for putting the pics up!!!

If you were to do those seat covers and then used fabric interior paint to paint the padded fabric interior door panels I think you'd have one sweet looking interior. Even do the gauge bezel in a flat/matte/satin black.

Yeah I hear you for sure, I wish the obs style trucks came with a black interior, but they don't. Anyways that style interior would be really nice even if you just painted the bezel black like you said, as well as the handle bezel. other than that even in a burgundy truck those seats would look good with tint and a few other mods. I hope you are able to figure out what you want, but honestly youcan get that same interior without the katzkin name. I'm sure if you found an interior shop they can find a similar leather and piece it together for 2/3rds the price. Anyways, the guy who owns that truck paid 2500 to 3000, not exactly sure. Hopefuly you can find the same for less!
