Has anybody been or heard about mudding on Hawbottom Road in Myersville, Maryland? Just wondering if anybody has been out there recently and how the trails are back there.

grnZ71

yeah im tired of going wheeling illegally. i heard that it starts off as a paved road then turns into dirt after a sign that says "County Maintenance Stops Here". i hear there is about 1/2 mile of mudholes and stuff. ill have to check it out since i work and live about 20 minutes away.

There are a few places, most illegal as stated, ive heard of places in myersville, i think it may be the frederick watershed.

yep...seems like we can only legally mud if someone owns farm land and is cool with guys ripping up their property. but anyways, i did a google search of Hawbottom rd and found a thread from what looks like a dirtbike forum

http://www.damnriders.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=158&view=previous

not too much info...pretty much the same as what i started the thread with.

I live out by the college in hagerstown.

there is a legal 18 mile trail in greenridge state forest for orv vehicles or trucks. Its not much of a challange but its legal and fun to go on four wheelers with a couple buddies and camp

UPDATE ON HAWBOTTOM ROAD!!!

so i had nothing do to today, so i took a drive up to hawbottom to check it out. i was pretty disappointed. its a public road that starts off paved, then about 2 miles it turns to dirt. there is a big water hole that is fun to drive through. its pretty deep too. there are several other smaller water holes the rest of the way through (about 1-2 miles). there was also a small mud pit (about 25 feet) that was kind of fun too. there are rocks through the whole ride, so it is damn bumpy.

so its not really something i would go out of my way to drive on, but if you pass it sometime on rt. 40 (right beside the Orioles sports bar) check it out and let me know what you think of it.

Update on Maryland Wheeling spots:

There are not any local legal wheeling areas.

Bloody Ponds in Glen Burnie, Yellowgates in Crofton, Coca Cola Drive off Rt 100, and the old Land Rover Test Track in Upper Marlboro all are illegal and off limits. Even Trails Rd was nearly closed when locals put up a gate to block access except for locals. The issue is that people (predominately not jeepers, use these places for illegal dumping of trash. Bloody Ponds and Yellowgates were used as dumping areas for stolen cars from Baltimore City. Coca Cola drive is acually owned by two separate entities: CSX Railroad and Howard County; that property is currently in development. The Land Rover test course was closed back in 1997 when they built their own course down off MLK Blvd in Lanham.

Here's a list of stuff that I know is legal that has been put together over the last 15 years or so:

MARYLAND

Assateague Island, Worcester County, MD
http://www.nps.gov/asis/orv.htm
Yearly permit required ($70). The area consists of 12 miles of sand beach within Maryland and additional beach South into Virginia. It should be stressed that this is nothing more than flat sand.

Green Ridge State Forest, Allegany County, MD
http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/greenridge.html
Green Ridge State Forest offers an 18-mile loop trail located on East Valley and Stafford Roads for off-road vehicles. It should be noted that this trail is a non-technical fire road.

PENNSYLVANIA

Rausch Creek Offroad Park - Joliett, PA (in the area of Tower City & Tremont)
http://www.rauschcreekoffroadpark.org
A yearly membership fee of $10 is required. This membership fee applies to all drivers and all passengers. Once you are a member, the price to wheel at the park is $25 per day, per vehicle, and $5 per day for passengers. Rausch Creek offers over 1000 acres of terrain for wheeling. Trails range from stock through highly technical.

Rock Run Recreation Area - Western Pa
http://wpa4xtrac.org
On site primitive camping will be available for those instances.

The members of the Advisory Committee will be coordinating all trail rides; please do not contact the park for OHV information (they will direct you back to us). The WPA4XTRAC will provide trail guides. Trail rides are limited to 40 participants. Pre-registration for all events is required.

We will offer three trail rides each day: green/low blue, blue/low black, and upper black. We do not have a red trail rating, but we certainly have trails that would garner a red rating at other parks. The trails were cut with smaller SUVs in mind (such as Jeep Grand Cherokees). Full size vehicles will find the trails to be very tight. Suggested equipment is as follows:
Green/low blue: stock vehicles and those with a mild lift (15 vehicles per trailride)
Blue/low black: 33” tires and at least one locker (10 vehicles per trailride). Potential for body and drivetrain damage.
Upper Black: 35” tires(minimum requirement), two lockers, and winch. Body and drivetrain damage are very possible. (15 vehicles per trailride)
To register for one of our trail rides, please include your name, address, phone number, trail selection, club (if applicable) and general vehicle specifics to dan58@marylandcreepers.com. The cost is $25/day plus $5 for passengers. Primitive camping is $10, and you must notify us 1-week prior to camping. Staging for trailrides begins at 0900, with a short drivers’ meeting following.

VIRGINIA

George Washington National Forest - Harrisonburg, VA
http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/recreation/ohv/index.shtml
George Washington National Forest (GWNF) offers miles of offroad vehicle travel on its forest service roads. These roads are largely non-technical fire roads however they offer wonderful weekend camping activities.

Crozet - Crozet, VA
http://www.xjsrule.com
Run by Chris and Heather Packard, the site of the Virginia RockCrawling and Offroad Challenge is opened periodically throughout the year for opening wheeling. The trails range from technical to highly technical.

Big Dogs Offroad - Gore, VA
http://www.bigdogsoffroad.com/
A fee of $75 applies for 3 days or $65 for 2 days. The area is open 4 times a year for seasonal wheeling events. The trails range from technical to highly technical.

Other Notable Areas

Wharton State Forest- Pine Barrens, New Jersey
http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/wharton.html
Flat, sand, water, mud.

Uwharrie National Forest - Troy, NC
http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreation/uwharrie/uwharrie_off.htm
A fee of $5 per day or $30 per year applies. Individual trails vary in length from 1.2 miles to 3.4 miles, but the ORV area networks the trails that they may be connected in series of un-recrossed lengths of up to about 20 miles. Trails range from stock to highly technical.

$500 trespassing tickets bring teh suck. :aniteef: :aniteef: :aniteef:

thats cool man...i was going to apply to the MSP a few years back. i had some connections with some of the nurses at the hospital. one of them has a husband who is really good friends with they guy who reviews the all the applications. i found out that some of my history would keep me from becoming a MSP so i changed gears and moved onto engineering.

i dont know anything about their academy, but their boot camp sounds pretty nice. its real military driven so im sure it would be pretty badass. but hey man congratulations and i hope all goes well for you.

I really appreciate it man! There academy is pretty much a bootcamp live in academy and is stricter than most military based camps. I hear the barracks are real ****ty and all you do is run. Which is not really a big deal considering i was going in the marines as a MP but decided to just go straight to the police. i just like that montgomery countys is from like 7-3 everyday and their traning facility is extremely nice

That sounds like a plan.

there are a ton of mudholes, long fire roads, huge rock sections, its a huge place we dont rock crawl, typically,

mostly greens (easy)actually but hit several blues (medium), you may not want to bring your truck when we go back, we are going to hit alot more of the blue trails

Wife and I took our rigs to Rausch Creek this weekend for a trial run of teh gooseneck. Trails were empty due to folks at the first installment of the RcRocs Comp. Weather was teh teh-tas. 70* and sunny. We ran nearly every red and black trail and may have found one by accident. Easy to do with only two rigs.

Trails accomplished: 5, Cumberland Valley, "O" trail, 19, Keystone Krawl, 'yet-to-be-named mud, stumps and rocks': a 'black-ish' trail (think Will Smith, not hard enough to be black, but looks the part), and we ran Rock Creek W->E.

Awesome day. One odd occurence: I noticed I suddenly had no steering and thought I blew a hydro line. Nope. A ****ing 8' log was wedged along my frame rail from the front bumper to the t-case. Weird part: no damage AT ALL. Odd ****.

If you guys go on some puss trails when Im not hunting turkeys or at a rifle match, I'd like to come along.

I got a stock '08 ECSB with real pretty paint. Ok, well I did scratch it once driving around my buddy's farm the first week I had it and somehow I kicked up a rock on the rocker panel a couple weeks ago when I was haul-assing through an old cornfield. But other than that its pretty clean and Im being a total bitch about messing it up.

now is the best time to go because of the mud factor, otherwise it will be dry and dusty. i assume everyone wants to do it on a saturday? does anyone have an issue with running the begginer (green)and intermidiate (blue) trails? you should figure on scratching your truck if you are going! anyone want to run this month? or should we make this an early june run?
