View Full Version : Impact gun - how about electric?

OK - the other thread sorts out general purpose AIR impact wrenches.

For now I am thinking of picking up an electric gun. I'm an infrequent weekend warrior but not afraid to get dirty. A full Air kit is not a practical choice at this time.

The only specific gun I'm considering is a Milwaukee 9072. It's a half inch, 7 amp, 300 ft pound gun. The bear is that it does weigh 7 pounds so it is really heavy. (nice comments in that other thread) I've read some about DeWalt but don't get excited about anything specific.

I can't entirely explain my lack of desire for a rechargable other than replacement batteries are expensive. I know DC offers a ton of torque so maybe I shouldn't be so skeptical.

Any experience? Comments? Recommendations?

We just got a Dewalt electric impact and it did alright taking off the exhaust collars of our suburban. It's not cordless though.

a guy at work has a cordless Dewalt and it works really well I thought. Obviously not the same ratings as an air impact but given that, it was able to get bolts tighter than I could by hand. I would recommend the Dewalt off the dozen or so times I've used his.

Yeah i bought the 1/2 snap on battery impact and that thing is strong. and the battry last for a while too. i think i can take off and put on a set of wheels with it and still have power to maybe go another round. I really never tried it. I have taken off axle nuts and crank shaft pully bolts with it too.

I recently bought a cordless 18v Bosch 1/2 in impact and am satisfied wit it. It is rated at 400 ft.lbs and it seems to produce that torque.

It ia a bit heavy at 7 lbs. Other than the weight, it is a super tool.

All the reviews I've read on the Milwaukee have been pretty darn good, so I'd shop around for a good price and be happy with the time you'll save around the garage.

Exactly. I would never trade that gun in unless snap-on finds a way to come out with something better. I also have the 3/8ths version and it is VERY handy.

well i know this is old and i hope it helps the OP, but i have the cordless 18v li ion milwalkee, it has served me well in taking wheels off, but if you have to do something in a tight space, like alot of the suspension stuff, it just wont fit, also the weight is a big deal when you are laying on the creeper. The torque is OK it takes a while to break some things loose, but it gets the job done. My biggest complaint is that with my stock ride height truck, i sometimes cant get the impact to fit.

God I love the cordless snap-on. Like 450 ft.pounds. You will not regret it.

I bought a new Vantage pro about a year ago (Another GREAT tool if you don't have the money for a MODIS), and talked him into throwing in a brand new free cordless impact.
I also have the 3/8ths Makita 14.4v cordless impact. Only about a hundred foot pounds, but EXTREMELY handy under the hood or other places that the snap on won't fit. Batteries on both last very long and charge quick.

I would miss the "shop symphony." Intro with impact wrench solo, shop compressor cuts in a few bars later.

Thanks for all the replies. I have been shopping around and also checking on this thread.

I just found a used electric DeWalt on Craigslist. If the negotiated price is right, I guess I'll start there. If I find the gun doesn't fit too often I'll move to air tools. I'm sure that's a common progression.
