Whats up guys? I dont know sh!t about bags so dont laugh to hard at my questions. What are the negatives about bags? What do you do If you have a bag blowout going down the road? I dont know alot about bags so ifI will be working on them every other week then maybe I dont know enough about them. A localshophere in Horn Lake, MS Silver Star Customs is charging 2800 for a complete setup anyone ever heard of this shop? I am thinking about baging my 2002 Sierra but I am worried that they will need alot of working on. Tell me what you guys think, Later

Air bags require very low maintenance. Shouldnt have to worry about them blowing out if they are installed properly, after all they are used on 18 wheelers.

BTW that 2800 dollar setup, check and see what kind of setup it is. Thats a low price, somebody else will chime in. Airbag suspension should not sacrifice quality.

You really want a list of items that comes with the $2800. What kinda parts (4-link, 2-link), what kinda valves (1/4", 1/2", etc) and what is your air supply?

You don't want a 315 Compressor and a 3 gallon tank if your going to be playing with bags all day. You'd easily want a 6 gallon and 2 big viair compressors.

Get a loist of parts you get....post it here....then we can help tune the system.

Maybe it's just me, but I had a bagged Sonoma a few years ago and I had nothing but trouble with it. I went through compressors like they were nothing. I'm guessing that the technology has gotten a little better since then, but I was running two of the larger Thomas compressors on two 7 gallon tanks (one compressor per tank) and I burned them up in two months. I had a big problem with leaks and burned out compressors.

JMHO...that's why the Sierra is static dropped. I don't have anything else to drive!

I haven't been impressed with the engine-driven kits that I've seen. Everyone that I knew that had 'em dithced 'em! Which brand of engine-driven compressors would you recommend?

And, I still don't trust bags. Plus, I used to drag the snot outta my Sonoma...a fate that I'm trying to save the Sierra from! :D:D:D

Yeah, but I'm not into man-lovin...sorry!

I just think that a nice static drop on a daily driven truck is all you need. But, then again, I think that I'm in the minority on this one!

Thanks! I like it the way it is too.

I'm not one to work on my own ride (unless it's motor related!) and I never could work on my bags. If something broke on the Sonoma, I had to have the truck taken somewhere and get it fixed, or have one of my buddies do it for me.

Coming from someone who had airbags...if you don't know how to work on 'em, DON'T GET 'EM!

(By the way, since I'm talking about the Sonoma, here's a pic of it....)

Heard of 'em. Seen some of their work. I wouldn't ever in my wildest dreams consider using that place for my bag job! All the stuff of theirs I've seen is purely hacked up JUNK!!!!:eek::eek:

Almost forgot about that part...I have seen some of their work up close (at Showfest) and was totally UNIMPRESSED by all of it. Plus, they are kinda arrogant and snotty. I was asking some questions about their body-dropped GMC and they didn't really wanna talk to me.

I would say NO to the shop. How far are you from Jackson, MS? I've got friends in AcrophobiA that do airbags down that way, and they do some quality work! :D Or, there's Metal Werks in Alabama.

Just some other options...

Yeah, that b/d GMC is the 1st thing I think of when I hear Silver Star's name. I was looking at it at Slamboree a couple years ago. It looked so beautiful from a distance with that color on it, and then I got up to it and saw how damn nasty it really was! :repuke: I felt sorry for that poor truck. :(

Cheaper than replacing a couple Thomas's ever year or so. It's a really a good deal (even at the sticker shocking price you see). But, if you can get a deal on one, it's even better. I've been using my A/C for about 6 months, and it rules!! :D

No real reasons. I honestly believe that a bagged truck, built right, can be fine for a daily driver. I just didn't want the extra stuff to worry about during the daily grind.

My Sonoma was bagged back in 99, and I put a LOT of miles on it--bought it brand new on 1/1/99 and sold it on 4/19/01 and it had 110K on the clock!!!!! My truck was the 2nd bagged S-10 in Jacksonville, and the same guy that did mine did the 1st one. None of the shops here were even doing bags back then, and my truck was kind of a guinea pig if you will.

Now that bags are popular, people know more about them and seem to be doing more reliable setups. I guess that I'm just stuck on the fact that if I wanna get in my truck and drive 15 hours to Mississippi for Showfest, I don't have to worry about anything but gas, oil and tires! :D

It's not impossible to use a bagged truck for a daily driver if it's done right...I just think that a static drop is better for a daily driver IMO!

sweet thanks for all the considerations, and hopefully my setup will go in perfect. this guy that is doing mine has done probably 4 full sizes and 6 s-dimes just this last summer, so hopefully he is good enough and experienced enough so that he doesnt phuck up mine. ive seen his truck......its awesome. 01 white gmc step side lays frame with an engine driven comp (2) 1/2" pump valves and (1)1/2" dump valves on each tire. the thing is fast! it also has a sick four link. and he is my friends friends, so i think he is trustworthy with my truck.

thanks again guys:rocking:

I'll have to go diggin for some more pics of the Sonoma. Don't have anymore that I can think of.

And, my last comment on the bagged DD question...if you trust the guy, and he does good work, you shouldn't have any problem. But, I would suggest knowing how to work on them just in case something goes wrong!

The problem with the reliability comes from the install. I currently have over 200K on my 90 1/2 ton and have not had any problems with it yet. Our tow rigs are on air and almoast every shop vehicle we have had was on air. If you stop and think about it, there are just as many hot rods on air as there are trucks. You dont hear of even a 1/4 of the problems out of the hot rodders as you do with the truck crowd and that comes from the quality of the install that was done.

But doesn't dragging your frame at 70 on the freeway shorten the life of it? Wanting it to be faster then the next guy with bigger ports and lines also help? It seems the hot rod guys would rather have it done right then have it move faster or tuck more rim than the next guy. I agree install is the majority of the problems or lack of problems, but it's also how it's used or abused.

That may have been my problem with the Sonoma...I drug on EVERYBODY, including grandmas on the side of the road with walkers! :D:D:D

If you can resist hearing the wonderful sound of frame dragging the asphalt, then you should do just fine! :D

Correct. The streetrod guys also spend the money to do it/have it done right.:read:

My truck is a DD and I plan to install the ART system myself. I'm not an expert on bags, and have never istalled bags before. I know that if I was getting a custom setup I wouldn't do it myself, but I'm getting a bolt on system. I can read instructions and have general mechanical knowledge and so do some of my friends. I really would like to learn how to install bags and I figured a bolt on for my dd would be a way to start. If something goes wrong I can always rely on the experts (Air Ride Technologies). I'm getting my setup delivered sometime next week (front system) (hopefully), and I plan to install it myself. Are there any strong reasons why I should have this installed somewhere professionally?
