Alright i am in the market to get a cummins. Unless you guys change my mind! My buddy said get a 12v 94-98 because the 12v's are easyer to work on and hop up. He told me everything is pretty much bolt on such as turning up the fuel to make it blow black smoke. Where the 98+ everything is computers. Like when you put a chip in it can't get enough fuel so you have to upgrade the fuel pump and stuff.
I want to get a 01-05 i am looking to spend between $15,000 and $18,500. What do you guys consdier high mileage for a diesel? I want a good reliable everyday driver. I live in Pa so how bad are diesels in cold wheather such as starting? What kind of fuel mileage are you guys getting? I know they say diesel's run for along time. But i really don't want anything with more than 100,000 miles. Do you guys know of any good diesel forums.

Therese lots of trucks from every brand running around with over 500K on them so you decide on what mileage you can live with. The dmax is a bit better at starting in the winter then the other in the year you listed. Fuel mileage totally depends on your truck and how you drive. Expect better then 16+ on the hwy and in some extreme cases 30MPG. Diesel Bombers is the best all around diesel site IMO, but its not very big. There are plenty of threads that discus the different brands pros and cons on this board read them and ask a question if you think of one.

All the cool kids are doing it yo! :flipoff:
j/k A little puff here or there is fine with me, but those who feel the need to lay a cloud from every light need to cool it.

To those that know about and like to tune diesels, rollin coal is not cool. All that shows is that your blowing money and potential horsepower out your tailpipe and fueling the fire for things like dpfs and such. A properly tuned diesel should have a slight puff and then a heat cloud, anything else is just compensation for lack of tuning.

I'd be surprised if they even bolted up together
But that's be a $hit ton of work
And I will say a decent sized cloud of smoke every once and awhile is slightly satisfying. Not ever time, but occasionally

Lol I could blow plenty of smoke if I wanted to. But my 50+ lbs of boost really doesnt need too. My dodge is far from stock and all i get is a nice little puff and then a heat cloud.

Not gettin any pics under the hood. I can go out and take a picture but no way to put it one here. Heres a visual. 2003 CCLB dodge silver stock, stock wheels, black interior, 5 in tip, running boards, 285s and no tailgate haha. Ripped it off when my a trailer broke. Oh yeah and a mangled rear bumper. 50+ is easy on a dodge. When the stock turbo was on there it was running 41psi with just a boost elbow and chip. Its far from stock under the hood now though.

Like i said your not getting a pic under the hood. Really not all the that different looking though to be honest. Never have seen a reason for it, never really will. If you want to drive out to oregon I will be more than happy to meet up and you can see how it runs. I am out of town for work right now so I have no way to get them from cell phone to comp and still have them look good. Left my card reader at home. Hey you can believe me if you want honestly i could care less lol. When I get back home I can get a pic and photobucket it on here, of the truck, not under the hood. If you were wondering no I do not have twins on there. Almost bought a set of the Piers Diesel research towing twins but decided it was a waste since I have no further plans for this truck.

Nothin personal, no one looks under the hood of any of my rigs. Just how ive been for ages haha. No twins, didnt need em though. A single will produce enough boost for just a shade under 600hp and I am under that so no need. Twins are nice if you hate lag, but Ive been driving turbod diesels for a while and doesnt bug me a bit.

Have you seen they make a stand alone controller for the cummins so ya'll can run VVT now? Jet like sounding turbos FTW

21 replies and only one actual answer to the OP
12 valves are simpler motors, easy to get power out of and will last forever. i would love to have an old 12 valve Cummins.
as far as mileage goes, depends on what you call high. my opinions of high mileage is different than yours. on a diesel, anything under 200 is not high, heck it is just broke in at 100k. over 100k would not bother me at all on a diesel, don't bother me on a gas engine either though.
you should be able to find a truck towards the upper end of your price range pretty easily.
