I don't know about the VHT, but the texture will look good in black.

Or SEM. Was looking into painting it, but thought dyeing it would hold up better, for it being my only vehicle. Plus it would be a lot cheaper.

Is there any product that adds oem looking texture to surfaces? When I was in my high school shop class I was a dumby and sanded my kick panels and the back panel.

i kind of doubt it. I would just try and find those pieces from a junkyard. I have a grey drivers side kick panel ill sell you if you need it. Its in great shape. The only thing it needs is for you to use your metal clip off of your panel cause mine walked off. PM me if interested.

You can get OEM-looking texture from SEM Texture Paint. However, it's the ABS-looking texture, and not the vinyl-looking texture. Junkyards are full of OBS's... I'd pick up whatever parts you need for the $10, and paint them whatever color you little heart desires.

And yes, black looks good on the OEM finish.

yeah that texture is acid etched into the parts mold... you will never duplicate it by spraying anything on it.

I vote to sand it all off and Base/Clear it all.

Yeah I did mine in SEM satin black at first. Then decided to smooth and paint it all later. Looked real good though and help up great. Just be sure to prep accordingly. I can get you those trim pieces you need also.

I'm wanting to know this also. I am buying a 95 sierra 2500 ext cab and I am wanting to dye everything black. All plastic and replace seats with something else. The truck has th dark blue interior now. I do not want to sand and paint. I personall do not like that look. Any directions to dyeing correctly? Any pics of this finished?

Use SEM. Nothing else compares. Follow the instructions. Easy as that.

why does everyone want that texture though? I like the smooth look. Isnt that what's in yours drew? sand/high build/sand/base/clear?

The smooth look is nice, but it has its drawbacks.

1. It's a lot harder to get the dash smooth than to live with the texture.
2. You can get some pretty hellacious reflections on the windshield at certain times in the day.
3. Upkeep is tougher. You have to worry about scratches and whatnot.

I love my smooth, painted dash in my '91. But when it comes down to it, in a driver, I'll stick with the texture.

That looks really nice big mac! I really wish i could find some bucket seats for the truck and do the same. How was dyeing the leather?

I think the smoothed dash looks good for trucks that are lowered and are going for the custom look. However, I'm going for a revamped stock kind of look. I don't want it to have that custom feel. Although almost everything wil be. Black plastic everything, Camo roof and door fabric, swapping the seats for bucket and console. Other than that I am not doing anything to the interior.

Dyeing the leather was no different than the dash. Just make sure you prep everything right. PREP is the key to a good job.

actully was told by fella at shop he did without ...long as pieces were good and clean ld be fine he said....said hed been useing it for years...was a sales rep at a body supply shop.

Basicly all l did was enshure pieces were clean..wiped down with wax and grease remover and sprayed with small spray gun..... sprayed 3 coats and it looked nice..cant wait to install :O)
Only advise l heeded was advise re wait time to cure
went as follows...products will be dry to touch in 10-15 mins...you will be temped to install right away...wait a day ...when thats done wait another day..was advised to leave them alone for a full 48 hrs to fully cure so am waiting the 48 hrs..been working on this build 4-5 years now so am in no rush...probally woulda just ended up scratching something and screwin it up

so far am impressed with my first go with SEM...read alot about it before choseing the stuff and alotta folks swear by it...quart cost me $70 canadian...some napa stores also have up here...for those wonderin a quart should do whole interior

Can you tell me wht product you used on your seats and how you went about doing that? I would like to change the color of my leather seats and black would be pretty cool, and this would be cheaper than a katzkin set. Great looking truck by the way love the console.

I did my dash a few weeks ago with the SEM Landua Black. Stuff works amazing. Can't believe I ever wasted my time with the Dupli Color stuff. It was 12 bucks a can at the auto store, but worth every penny.

you could try modge podge its a type of glue my dad uses on deer noses in his taxidermy work. he also used it on his old truck where he sanded a spot on the dash. you have to apply it with a brush and duplicate the texture it will take practice so dont just try it on the kick panels right away practice on wood or something first.

Here's mine. Used krylon spray paint on all the hard plastics, and vinyl paint on the softer stuff. Door panels are as I orderd them, no paint on them. I think it turned out great.

Got them from LRS, here's a link to their door panel page http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/products/Chevy-GMC-Truck-Door-Panels

I can't remember how many cans I used in my standard cab, I think it was 3, doing 2 coats on the hard plastics. Then 1 or 2 cans for the soft plastics.
So maybe 4-5 for an ext cab? And a can or 2 of vinyl paint for the soft stuff (glove box, above instrument cluster, small side vent panels).
