View Full Version : Ok, ok..so I lied. Another build thread (albeit a small project)

I stated I wouldn't put together a thread about this, but now I'm looking for some opinions on whether this light bar should have a top bar that would visually surround the 4 lights and possibl make it look more finished, or keep the original idea with the 4 lights just sitting atop the bar.
Design for this is sort of a prerunner style in the way it protrudes forward. It's almost done, just need to add a support arm on each side, not sure if the ends will be that length or be cut shorter. We'll decide that tonight or tomorrow when we continue work on it, should be done in about 3 more hours, this was a quick project. Also need to add some type of tabs that will be set back from the front bar to hold 4 Hella Black Magics across..

Pics I found this morning..granted this is way bigger than the one I am bulding, just using it as reference for the bar above the lights. Obviously son't want this thing growing in size either..it's nice and compact as it is now which is the reason for the new scaled down look/design.
I just liked this design because it was one of the few custom fabbed ones I found that had that prerunner style but retained the original bumper, unlike the real prerunners.

He's right...I practically am the fabricator. I've been present every second and am an extra set of hands during the whole process. I certainly know how to build this stuff now.
And yeah Jerry...he probably loves me as much as Jeff at the Trans Shoppe loves you. :chair:
He does like doing projects like this, they're a change from the norm of what he would normally build, he's certainly not charging me usual fabrciation rates for any of these projects.
See..this is why I don't make up threads, cause some of you always try and jack my thread... for once add something worthwhile to the thread.

What about adding a bar that would wrap up over top of the lights for a little more of a offroad protection look?

Umberto's not a dick...just look at his cute expression in the couple of pictures he's in the background in.
But in actuality, I don't think that a bar over the top would really do anything to set it off, and would probably complicate the "simple" design of this bar. I have a picture in my head but I can't really think of a good way to word it, it almost comes up as the fangs from the grille guard turned upside down with a triangulated piece of stock coming from the tip back to the end of the front/side pieces that you said you weren't sure if you were going to cut or not. Something to frame the lights, but leave the top open I guess.

FWIW, I personally wouldn't put another bar over the lights.... Show off the front of the truck a little too, with the bar on top of the lights its going to be more bulky, and thats also more weight you need to support at the mounts...
keep it simply IMO
AllBlkdOut07
08-27-2009, 03:50 PM
I agree Matt, that's why I was thinking of going behind them which wouldn't really add anymore bulk but you would at least see the sides of the one tube which would also help to give it an encapsulated effect/look.

I dont want you to make that section out of chain link... just put tabs or something on it to wrap around a tow strap or tow chain for when you're at a show. I think a black powdercoated chain with D-Links would look sweet 'for show'.
That way its more than just a light holder..

holy crap umberto, your thread has been raped.
anyway from that picture you sent me it looked like a good idea, i say go with that, it shows off the front more than the one you had on there even though it was badass. id say line-x it and put those lights on it. those corners seem a tad off if you think about it, they are just sticking out there. maybe some hoops or something to angle and rap it back to the center and go in sync with the way you will have your lights mounted.

I like the idea of the "encapsulated" look that you're talking about more so than one over the physical top of the lights. Do you have any sketches or renderings of the bar behind?
AllBlkdOut07

Thanks man..well, yesterday evening we were starting on trying to figure out the bends on the side support arms and the getting notches right which were a PITA since it had to fit on a tube that had 2 different angles..then I got a call that my g/f was being taken into EMERGENCY from some back pain and chest pressure she'd been experiencing for several days now. So I had to leave right in the middle if working so we got like nothing done in the 45 minutes I was there.

So, I had some time to photoshop the remaining tube and lights on the truck to try and figure out how to finish this damned thing before we delve into it and start hacking it up, or bending/welding tube. Not sure what the hell to do now. Not in love with any of these ideas. It's tough too because the angle of the shot I took was looking down on the truck, so the whole thing looks different the lower your view, not to mention it obviously won't be bare metal but LineX'd which will allow it to blend in better too.

I like the 4th one with the end tubes of the 2nd one.
So that means you prefer the height of the bar behind the lights on option 4 as well as where the bars tie into the main bar but with the longer ends? Yeah, the shorter cut ends look like sh*t.
Not feeling the lower support arms?

AllBlkdOut07
08-30-2009, 06:15 PM
Backplating, yeah. What angle they will be at I haven't decided yet, either flat from the front (where you don't see the capped ends) or angled forward which will allow you to see the capped ends from the front.

The one I was leaning towards with LineX to ive a better idea what it might look like.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z120/AllBlkdOut07/lightbarv2_3_LineX.jpg
And this was what I was referring to as far as the main bar not really pointing upwards as the pic shows. It looks that way because it's angled back towards the bumper caps and the photoshopped pic was taken up close looking down on it slightly. In this pic it looks like they're angled down since it's a low view looking up. The main bar looks STRAIGHT ACROSS on a straight on view of the front.

I am probably to late to effect anything and this maybe to complicated to do now any way but I think the main center bar needs to be thicker.. or maybe do one of the same thinkness attached to the that one... I just think the front bumper on the truck so big it needs a bigger main bar so it doesn't look too small.

I am kind of liking the fourth one with the top cross bar roughly even with the height of the actual bulbs inside the lamps. It also looks as thought the front bar is roughly the same width of the center section of your bumper.
I know you already have your four round lamps, but, I think rectangular ones would flow with the front end a little better.

Given your fabricator's hatred of OCC, and the fact that your truck looks like something the Dark Knight would drive, a non-Batman bat logo might be cool. The design would depend on how detailed you can make it.

Assuming you had the logo cut out of a piece of steel, probably using a water jet, and placed it on top of the actual skid plate, the top one would show up better if everything done in black. The bigger voids in the wings would help show the shape better.
Of course, I am assuming you would have the whole skid plate done in black Line X.
If it were my truck, I'd probably do the plate in say a gloss black and then have the bat done in a flat black. It would still fit the all black theme, but, it would give a little better contrast than just black Line-X. A Dark Gray bat on a black background might work, as well. Instead of using paint, go with powder coat for the added durability.

Yeah, if you look at my grille, I have the bowtie emblem powdercoated in a black wrinkle and against the gloss black painted grille and gloss p'coated tubular inserts it looks grey and really shows up well..I agree.

PROGRESS UPDATE
Bars ended up coming out differently than the previous photoshop, the bar behind the lights just didn't look right tieing into the main tube ends, and the bends looked better inside the hard bends of the main tube. We still need to cut 2" off the ends (tube ends will align with the edge of the for lamp), and add the tabs for the lights.

Doubt it, cause the length of that opening is really short. I was looking into getting the skidplates, the lower and diff plates and have those p'coated in the same powder the bowtie is done in. Maybe I can somehow add that emblem to that in a gloss black.

I thought the same thing tonight when I was there looking at it. I might see if we can add a small tube out there somehow to visually support it. Want to try and keep it as simple as possible too. When we cut them shorter that might help as well.

AllBlkdOut07

Of course, only approx 4-5 hours total time left before dropping off for LineXing.
Only thing is, won't work on it until end of next week since I am going away the Cape Cod Sat morning not returning until Wed.
I ordered an extra set of Black Magics from AutoBarn located in NY on ebay since they were cheapest around, got an email on the Tue the 25th that it shipped that day, here we are Wed the 2nd and still no box. Called today and they were like..um it's shipping tomorrow, but it's not here yet. We don't recall sending an email stating it was shipped they said. So, I have a feeling when I get back I still won't have Black Magics shipped from them (douchebags).

Well, I have much less work left than you do. Can't wait to see it, should look really good.
As far as the fangs, you'll have to rely on a photo. Don't worry, the front of the new lightbar is structurely much stronger than the GG, this thing would put a serious hurting on an import, although considering it's height, probably go right through a front/back window. lol

Dropping this off to get LineX'd then wire it up. Just threw the lights on there real quick, they've not really lined up right, but you get the idea.
We ended up cutting the entire tube that extended in front of the bumper cap, and add a short, capped turn down, looks better this way, and it's nice and compact. Once it's all coated should blend in nicely.

Sturdy? Well..considering the number of short tubes welded altogether in a small area, this thing is solid, way stronger than the previous grille guard which was more open with longer tubing. It's going nowhere. Plus the turndowns are like 2" away from the bumper cap.(see pic #3)

Dropped the lightbar off to get LineX'd, picking it up tomorrow.
Photoshopped LineX on 2 shots to give a better idea how it'll look.

You two clowns need to learn about patience... where are your wheels/tires slacker!?!?!?!
I had to work all day, just picked it up at 4pm and just got back a while ago. Not going to bolt it onto the truck since I would like to allow it to dry and harden overnight. New LineX place did a kickass job on it, nice even coverage/texture, I'll def use them again. Looks quite different from the bare metal pics I posted.

So what happened? The last shop used a primer but the LineX didn;t adhere to the DOM tubing too well. I mean it's all encapsulated, but if you slice it it just pulls right off. This new bar didn't puddle when I torqued down on the plates with the bolts/washers like the previous GG and tire mount did. So, looks like they did a better job.
well i almost forgot about this thread congrats for your engagement to tracy and its bout time your done with this lets see whats next?
Thank you. Well, I got Rancho skid plates, should have them p'coated in time for Englishtown. You going Dan?

skidplates? i thought you were fabbing up your own with a bat logo?
WildChevys
09-20-2009, 06:34 PM
that logo was for the front lower cross-member OR a skit plate
fortplainman
09-20-2009, 07:07 PM
well ya i know that but he said he bought a rancho skidplate, he wont be able to have a place for that bat. i figured he would get it fabbed up himself with the hydraulic punched flanges, cut out the logo and weld it on the skidplate and make it look like its popping outta it by making rounding grinds from the welds.
AllBlkdOut07
09-20-2009, 07:16 PM
Huh? Speak engrish pease.
fortplainman
09-20-2009, 07:25 PM
basically take a piece of flat steel, probably just a regular 1080 steel, and bend it at an angle the stock one is at, bend corners for mounting points, take circular hydraulic flanges and make something like this outta it:
http://image.off-roadweb.com/f/8574633/0608or_14_z+2005_ford_f_150+skid_plate.jpg
and after that you make the bat outta either a waterjet machine or just plasma torch and grinder. weld it on with a large quarter-layed weld and then grind that weld down to not see it and to make it look like the bat is kind of hanging out of the center of the skidplate. or the quick and easy way is to cut it out of the skidplate itself.

09-20-2009, 07:33 PM
ah well umberto you can get that bat design going, after you line-x the whole skidplate though. just do what i described up above with a bat and just make it noticable, like your rear end cover looks or something i dont know.
AllBlkdOut07
09-20-2009, 07:51 PM
Not LineXing the skidplate, I'm p'coating the plate black wrinkle (same p'coat as the billet bowtie) and leaving the frame black gloss as it came.
fortplainman
09-20-2009, 07:52 PM
just thought id give you some suggestions but thats cool too. i gotta look at that bowtie because i thought that was line-x on it.
