View Full Version : What would it take to push a C10/K10/K5 into the 13s?
I would be MORE than happy if I can push whatever I buy next into the 13s. It definitely is going to be a pre-87 C10, K10, or K5. I assume the heaviest is K5, so let's say I pick one of those up tomorrow.
Am I wasting my time researching small blocks?
Desktop Dyno is showing 415HP (flywheel) from a 383 with E-Tech 170 heads, Edelbrock 2201 cam, longtube headers w/ mufflers (glasspacks), 750CFM carb, and 9.5:1 CR.
This will be a daily driver, and am just looking for engine advice. Transmission ... I'm not to sure what I should be looking for that will most easily bolt up - but I'm not worried about that until I find a truck I'm going to buy (if it's auto, I'll stick with auto - if it's stick I'll stay with that).

a K5 im going to say is around 5200LBS so umm it would take about 450hp + . better look into a bigblock or a power adder. why not get a camaro or firebird? they will get into the 13s with about 350 hp and a some good rubber

Plan on some squeeze, and a strong motor. The 383 you are looking at, plus 100 or 125 should net you mid to high 13s.
Guess it was less realistic than I thought ... oh well.

13s is FAST for any full size truck.. i finally got my truck into the high sixteen second range (16.9). if you wanna go fast buy something small and light.... 89 stlye 5L mustang :) easy to upgrade and tons of aftermarket and used mods hanging around!
but if you wanna go 4wd then stick with the fsc.

13 is quick for one of those trucks but not to big of deal. if you want to run a heavy vehicle just have to torque to make up for it. i run a TBSS and know alot of guys with marauders and tahoes and we go to the heavy weight shoot out every year, and they should give anyone hope. get some stupid gears, a tranny that breaks necks, and a big block with a little juice and you should be happy with the result.

If everyone did this there would be more a$$ bag Mustang owners, and no diversity at the track.
My 2001 GMC 2500 runs 13.4 with a tune, converter, exhaust, 100 shot. On the juice I am around 450 hp and the truck weighs just over 4000 lbs.

a C10 shouldnt be too hard to get into the 13s tho since its 2wd.
but a K10 or K5 would take alot more

piece of cake.
Stock Vortec 350, LT headers, decent flowing exhaust, dyno tune, 3000 stall converter, slicks, 50-shot (make it a 100 if its a 4WD), and you're there.
first time to the track with this recipe, I ran consistent 13.9s at 4950 lbs. stock 3.73 gears.

I've been playin' with my truck since she was a 17 second slug. There is no way a STOCK 350 , no tune, and 342 gears will ever hit low-mid 14's.
What's you altitude? 10 000 feet below sea level?

Extensive weight reductions
Homemade ram air
aftermarket fuel pump and regulator
no swaybar
softened rear springs
drag shocks
e-fans
2800 converter
3.42 gears
275/60 drag radials
built trans
shorty headers, dumped magnaflow
aftermarket ignition
That about covers it. Dont have a scanner so no timeslips but plenty of members have seen me run similar times in the truck

Where is your power going?
My 5,600 lbs Van ran a 15.6 @ 88 with a 2.18s 60' and only had 330-340 FWHP (275 RWHP)...Running stock 3.08 gears and stock 1,600 rpm stall torque converter. Basically ported swirl ports, LT1 cam, Tri-Y headers, and 2 1/2" duals, with PCM program, shifting at 5,800 rpm.
My 5,480 lbs Ram Quad Cab with an internally stock 08/09 4.7 (310 hp @ 5,950, 330TQ @ 3,950 STOCK), 4" CAI, Dual 2 1/4" exhaust, SCT programmed, stock 2,000 rpm stall, and stock 3.55 gears, ran a 15.5 @ 87 with a 2.35s 60'. I don't even have headers or an E-fan on this one. 3,400 stall and 4.56s SOON!
It was running a little rich and overtimed in the cold weather due to PCM compensation for the ~170*F coolant and 30* intake air. It usually pulls smoother in the 4.5-6.5K RPM band. Still hit 85 mph ~ 16 seconds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAiJuUXUba0
I guess I am just curious where your power is going? Are you shifting at a low rpm or do you have some weird gear/tire combination that is keeping you out of your powerband?

i have no idea. transfer case takes some. 32 inch tires with 3.73s. i do have a problem i cant figure out, it breaks up at around 4500 to redline. i think its the ignition system. but i shift at 5400

I wish I was at sea level, I would have to drop about 3000 feet. That does make sense and more beleivable. Up here you'd be running low 15's.
sfsc, what's your altitude? Less mods would be required if you were at sea level also.

LOL, Hunter they dont believe you.:nono: Thats alright, they dont believe my truck runs what it does either. For the record, first time I met Hunter at the track I beat him by 2/10s IIRC, the last time we went he beat me by 2/10s. His truck launches great and shifts hard. He is like me, just a couple mods done. Weight reduction and suspension setup makes a good bit of difference. We have both checked out each others trucks, and what we list as mods are whats on them. Unlike some people, when we get called out to the track, we show up.

My question for the OP is, are you wanting to do it on all motor, or are you willing to use a power adder? Plenty of OOBS RCSB trucks running impressive numbers out there, if you like to be different then go for the K5! IMOP.

Dang man, low 14s is a respectable time with a pretty stock setup. I'd rather have a slower time with the power w/dl and a/c. Or just run an LT header back exhaust with a tune.

To me, taking all that crap out and bringing it back more towards the bare essentials makes it more fun to drive. One day it might have a badass motor under the hood, but I love driving it as it is now.
