Hi All!

Im new here, and im wanting to put a 6.5 turbo diesel in my 1959 chevy apache 36. what all would i need to do? I do plan on putting the 235 back in someday so i would like to leave my original fuel system alone. Im new to the world of diesel (always loved it, just dont know anything about it), ive only known my inline sixes, so any and all information would be much appreciated!!!

thanks all
John

Welcome to the site.

That would be an interesting swap, but why would you want to reverse it in the future ?

As to what you would need for the swap I would tell you get the complete drive train from a doner truck and transfer everything to your Apache.

the only reason i would want to change it back is to have the truck 100% original if i ever sold it...

alrighty, sounds good to me!

Besides the driveline, you would definitely would need heavier springs in the front. Then you have to think about the stress on the front end components.I am not sure but i think your truck would have kingpins on the front axle.Just make sure everything is in good shape.

the front end can handle the weight, the engine that is in it right now is roughly 1,450 LBs... are there any major components that would need to be hooked up that are not attached to the engine?

The main thing is to make sure you have the room. You will need to run two batteries as well. I would look for a 1992-93 donor truck as the '94 and later trucks use the DS4 electric injection pump, and will involve more electronics including the unreliable PMD. I would also grab one of the inline lift pumps from the 6.5 and use it. Also the lift pump on some of the 6.5's are powered thru the oil pressure switch, and are noted for burning the contacts in the switch. There is an upgrade that can be done using a 12 volt relay that is pretty simple if you decide to go like that. I will mention that if you are not familiar with diesels then you may be in for a ride. The 6.5 can be a good motor but they have plenty of quirks. I have definitely learned my way around them since having my current service truck. Overall it has been a great motor.
