View Full Version : Bad drone, what to do?

Well the drone is somewhat my fault, I had my exhaust going all the way back with angled tips (flowmaster single in dual out). I did like the sound but I hated the way the tips looked so I just hacked them off and got turn downs welded (yes I know they don't look pretty). After driving it for about a month, it's driving me crazy, the drone is horrible at just about any speed besides idle. I am asking your opinions on quieting it down for a reasonable cost while maintaining the look of no tips. Although both tips coming out before the rear tire wouldn't bother me to bad. Heck I'm considering finding a stock muffler and putting a turndown on that!

Heres how it was (truck on the left)

Put the tailpipes back on and put turndowns on just before the bumper. It'll have the least amount of drone if it exits behind the truck, not under it.

Yup...^^^^^what he said^^^^^
Quite a bit of sound dampening comes from the tailpipes anyway, and you removed that, and with the turndowns, the sound is hitting the pavement, and bouncing right back up. Install some tucked up tail pipes, and turn them down after the bumper.

Thats what I was going to say. I had the same problem with my old truck, accept I had 90 degree bends pointing out not down and it droned like crazy. Replaced it with a Magnaflow. Nuff said.

Yeah I was afraid of that, I just don't want to fork out the money for a new muffler. Well I suppose I could get the exhaust redone and just do turndowns before the bumper with no tips. That probably won't cost too much since I still have the hangers and stuff on there from my old setup.

OP, did it drone before you chopped off the tailpipes? If not, then it's obviously not the muffler that's at fault. Replace the tails, exiting them as a couple advised right before the rear bumper, and you should be good to go.

No it didn't really drone, or not nearly as bad. I just can't even think straight with the way it is now. It's like the perfect tone that matches songs sometimes. My spring break is next week so hopefully it wont cost much money to get the pipes run and I can get it done then.
