I can't tell ya the details but my buddy has a 383 with a thumper cam and it runs great and sounds mean as #@$!#!!! If you really want I can call him and get the specs or part #... I know its matched to his intake and is a 4 speed so the combo may not work for you! I like it so much thats what I am going with but I have to match my setup (automatic) and also I wanna add that in the Summit catalog it only list roller cams but they do have them for the hydrolic just ask..

I've done close to 500hp to the rear wheels on a 383 With some old Dart Iron Eagles and a XE284H before, the 274 cam is what a friend had in his ported camel hump head 383 in a 1980 firebird, through the factory 2.25" exhaust, full interior ran 12.5's so i would say they are good cams.

thats what i was think justin, right now i just have 882 heads 194's 76cc with 9.5:1 compression maybe, but i would defently like to but it up to its real potentail right now its no better then the kid in the old 350 that puls up beside me, im thinkin some 64cc heads to bump compression to where it should be hoping for around 10.5 and either 274 or 284 cam should fix that department, i am also running a nv3500 5 spd trans witch makes the think the xe274 would be beter cam choice?

honestly best bang-for-the-buck cyl heads around right now, are the Pro-Comp's. The head castings are good, its just all of the chinese springs/valves i dont trust on them. If you could pick up a set of 210cc runner Pro-comps with a 64cc chamber, you'd be well in the 400hp range with an XE274. Because you have a manual, depending on the rear gear ratio i would go with the XE284H. Its simply an awesome cam providing you can live with lope @ idle and slightly above. the 284H with a good set of heads will take you to about 6500-6800rpm shift points, and the 274 would keep you around the 6-6200rpm range.

stick with the 274h cam. 3.08's are going to kill you and 3.73's are not going to be enough for anything bigger.

ya it sucks, itll do for now, i got the 274 other day from a guy i knew ended up going to diffrent cam for his, he had 308s but in an s10, he said it should pull alot harder then the rv cam i run now, but gears will make world of diffrence..

Ur Best bet IMO is to switch to a set of vortec heads and run with the 274 cam. I built a 383 for my buddy with that setup and it pulls like a freight train. Also switch to an air gap intake. Professional products makes one for like $175. Slap a holley 750 on it and hang on.

for the cash spend on getting a set of vortec's, modifying them for the required valve lift, new springs, etc and anything else they need, a much better step would be getting an entry set of aluminum or iron heads like the Dart Iron Eagles, or a set of Procomp heads.

with the 274 cam you wont have to do any machining stock vortecs spring will handle that lift. If you wanted to step the springs up though you could put a set of z28's on it. You can pick a set of pull off vortecs up at a swap meet for under $200 dollars and run them. As long as you can find a set of 906's they genereally dont have anything wrong.

yes, cam i ended up going with was the xe284 507/510 lift duration @ .50 240/246, little bigger but should go like rape date hopfully..
