so, i am gonna cage my jeep within the next month or so. i have a miller stick welder, but am much more experience with a MIG than a stick, so on something like a cage i would rather MIG it than use the stick since i have a better idea what i am doing on a MIG.
so, what to get? i want a 220v unit, as most 110 units have a low duty cycle, and are only rated up to 1/4" plate. i plan on using it alot (for now atleast), and welding thicker material than just 1/4".
is there a 110v unit that has a higher duty rating? most i have found only have a 20% rating or so? i could probably deal with only up to 1/4" plate i guess.
i have not brand preferance, but we use miller and hobart at work, and i know i prefer the miller over the hobart.

I have a 185 miller and love it, built several roll cages with it.

Oh and its easier here to get parts for the miller as well as getting it worked on, but havent had that problem yet.

i have a 110v hobart. Works good for stuff under 1/4" thick and its so much better than the stick welder it replaced.

Miller 211 if you can swing it. Since it will run on 110v or 230v by switching around the smart plug on the end. You want to do light sheet metal on the back side of the house put the 110v head on the plug and drag it over there. Want to weld up your 3/8 thick frame rails pull it over to your dedicated 220V outlet switch the plug around and bam good to go. I was going to get one till my tax refund went to other things. Its still on my wish list though. And its the size of the miller 185 since it uses the same case/frame.

i weld with a millermatic 200 all day at work and like it alot. but anything like it is out of my price range. well, any welder i want is out of my price range really lol.
i may end up having to buy a smaller 110v unit for the time being and just deal with it, leave my heavy welding to work and just stick to lighter stuff here at home.

A hobart 140 would do good. If you supply it with enough power using something like a 30amp 110 you should be fine. Thicker than 1/4 can be welded too. That is the rating for a single pass, so if you have lets say some 3/8 plate, youd just need to make a few passes with a root and 2 stringers.

i had a northern tools 135 welder, it worked about 6 times then the wire feed broke. When it did work it sucked.
I took it back and got a hobart 140 and it works great. also welds a lot smoother than the other one when just using flux core wire
