I personally dislike all of the cleaners in a can you can get at the auto parts store. They definitely get the job done but they tend to smell toxic and they take away that new car smell if you still had one to begin with. If the stains are minor, I mix some murphy oil soap with water and put that in a spray bottle that I mist over the trouble spots and I vigorously rub and wipe those dampened areas with a cotton towel. It gets the job done and it doesn't leave a bad odor.
I am currently detailing a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a cloth interior and a dog has created a few minor spots here and there. I used some citrus degreaser on the dark spots and quickly scrubbed those areas with a dawn soap and water bucket dunked scrub brush. I then soaked up all the excess water with a cotton towel. I have a fan drying off the seats and so far they are looking good as new and won't have that toxic carpet cleaner smell when I am done.
Lots of other members here have had great luck with that purple power degreaser diluted and sprayed onto the carpet and then scrubbed with a brush. I would go that route if I still had some but I ran out.

I just use regular dawn soap in hot water and scrub with a rag. Works pretty well.

That's exactly what I used on a grey cloth interior for my first detail customer yesterday. The seats and carpet has some stains here and there from dogs and the usual mud from shoes. I misted the areas with a citrus degreaser and then scrubbed with a brush dunked in warm dawn soap and water. I then soaked up the excess water with a cotton towel and ran a fan in the interior to dry everything up while I spent the next several hours polishing, galzing, and sealing the exterior paint. It looked brand new inside and there was no overpowering smell from the dawn soap at all. Perfect. The only thing I forgot to do was take an after shot of the interior because I was crunched for time.

Here's the before dawn soap and water solution and some scubbing. Like I said previously, no after shot but all of those stains were GONE so I can vouch that if dawn soap and water is all you might have around the house to clean cloth seats and carpet, it will get the job done nicely.

beleive it or not, glass cleaner works good, if the carpet is dark colored, otherwise the blue cleaner sometimes stains the light carpet
