Header/Tuning question

I've recently obtained a Superchips Cortex, programed it for performance and it had the Rado running real nicely, But it wasn't quite where I wanted it. I had to do some towing so then I had to reprogram it for such. Like I said though, when it was in performance mode it was real close to where I wanted it so to step in up a notch I installed a pair of stainless steel JBA shorty headers. After the install I reprogramed it to performance again. While I could feel some power it still wasn't quite where it was when the performance program had it running before. This is kind of a Tuner/Header question so here it finally is. Does the computer adjust to the new headers? It smells like it's running a little rich, is there any thing else that I can or should do? Its an 07 with the 5.3.

You need a custom tune, handhelds cant adjust to headers. least i dont think they can

Initially when I programmed it to the performance tune there wasn't an incredible increase but after about a week it really woke up. I'm REALLY hoping that will be the case here. I dropped a nice dime on the headers and tuner I would hate to have negligible gains. I was afraid of that the tuner might not adjust but there is still some time. I will keep you posted if I find any differences. Thanks for the input.

shouldnt have to worry about tuning for shorties, ur stock manifolds were basically the same as shorties, so u wont see any gains from shorties on a 4.8/5.3/ls1

Another question for you then. When I bought the shorties, the notes said that I would require a y-pipe. I didn't know why but I picked one up. The guys at the shop weren't sure why the notes said I needed one because I didn't. The headers fit perfectly. Question is, is a y-pipe worth the money of installation since I have it already or should I just return it?

if its a stock y pipe, its not gonna help any, if its bigger than stock, or has high flow cats, or both, then yes, install it

The stock is a Y, at least as far as I could see. If you couldn't tell already, I'm no mechanic. But the Y I got was a Magnaflow 3 in 3 out. So it's bigger and I'd assume it'd be higher flow. Gains in HP, sound? I was leaning towards throwing it on since I had it anyways, I think i just might.:think:

yeh since its bigger, go for it, it should give u more gains than those shorties

Ouch, there should be more hype to the Y pipe than the headers. All I ever heard was how great shorties were and the Y pipe always got the asterisks. I did notice some gains from the headers so it wasn't a total waste put so far it's not what I was hoping for the money.:dunce:

yep, if u compare ur stock manifolds to the shorties, there is little to no difference, longtubes are where the power gains are at....so thats why u felt very little gains other than probably a little deeper exhaust note....if ur gonna get shorties, the power gains will be all in the Y pipe, and magnaflow makes a great quality y pipe so good choice on that

Well I'm glad to hear I made a good call somewhere. The tone is a little meaner, scars the ladies when I start it up at work...It's great! :head: Does anyone even make LT's for the 07 Silverado yet. I've read a couple of threads that say LT's are where it's at but I can't seem to find any. Am I blind or are they just not there? The Y tube install will likely be next month. I'm throwing on some JBA's power cables and new plugs. The truck's about due, I'll probably do all in one shot.

don't waste your money on plug wires. Get ngk tr55 plugs or stock ac delcos

Thanks for the link. Yeah, a little pricey for me at the moment, we'll see if I get that raise at work first. :thumbup: As for the plugs, I only paid $60 so I don't feel like I'm getting robbed, I don't expect the much of anything put durability out of them. They'll provide more clearance than the ones I have now. The guys at the shop showed me that a couple of the wire were a little close and that I should beware of it in case the rig starts running a little funny. I was thinking of the t55 or the iridiums from NGK, I haven't decided yet.

lol, u would have to sell them to someone is doesnt know much about trucks....just feed them some **** like, "shorties are better for torque because of the sharp bends", or something like that

most people around here run NGK Tr6's, they are only good for 30k miles, but they are more of a performance plug....i personally am gonna stick with AcDelco Platinum since i have an OBS

Yeah the LTs may have given me more but they were out of the budget, these shorties gave me what I needed and I do recommend them IF you're looking for shorties. Thanks again. I just put in a thread with questions about Ignition Kits, throw it in your search. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
