Into your 1/2 ton? Good luck.

I do recall seeing an '89 RCSS before in a magazine that had a Dmax in it.

Yes. Go to the Diesel Page. They have a book about putting a Duramax/Allison into an OBS truck.

Plan on a ton of frame reinforcement, heavier duty suspension, deep pockets full of $, and lots of tylenol for all the headaches youll experience.

Hey, that first one looks familiar to me:biggrin:.

I would reccomend you do some research before you post stuff like this. Is the swap easy, no. Is all of the stuff you mentioned needed, NO. Bigley is putting over 600HP to the rear wheels in his 89 short bed half ton truck, and when I talked to him he mentioned nothing about needing frame re-inforcements or beefed up suspension. The DURAMAX/ALLISON combo is only about 230 pounds heavier than a 6.5/4L80E combo which was offerred in the 1500 trucks. 2 1/4 turns on the torsion bars leveled my BURB right back up to stock plus a little extra to allow for settling later on. The worst part of the whole swap was getting the intercooler, radiator, condenser, and TCM all squeezed in up front. The actual fitting of the engine is actually fairly easy with the mount diagrams from BIGLEY'S book. I did modify my mounts some from his, but it isn't required(I beefed mine up a little bit more and added limiter blocks as I knew I would be towing with mine). IF you are handy with tools and have LOTS of patience(as well as a welder, heavy duty engine hoist, good engine stands, and I highly reccomend a plasma cutter), you can pull this swap off.

You went from a heavy 6.5 to a little heavier 6.6 duramax. Your burban already had the heavy suspension in it, yet you still needed a few turns on the TB's to level it out.

Hes goin from a small block gasser with a 4l60 to a duramax/allison on 1500 Z71 sport suspension. Thats a much bigger weight difference, maybe cranking the bars would level it out, not sure.. but you'd have to crank a ton, and have shiitty angles and ride like a tank.

Frame reinforcement probably isnt 100% neccesary, but the amount of torque put out from a diesel on a 1500 frame isnt going to be pretty when you start cranking some power through it. I highly doubt 'bigley' is putting 600rwhp down on a stock 1500 frame without reinforcement. And if your suburban came with a 6.5 in it, It was equipped with a 2500 frame, 2500 brakes, 8 lug wheels, 4l80 trans, greater towing capacity, etc.

But hell, what do I know.

Seriously guys? I mean the turbo 6.5 came factory in some 1/2 ton Z71s. As seen in the magazines and with the book they put it into a friggin RCSB half ton only running the 9.5" rear end. Dont plan on doin any 40psi 4wd boosted launches or else yea you'll start tearin sh!t up. Id kill to have a 4wd CCLB OBS with a duramax/allison. And like the fermanator said the only difficulty of the swap is fitting everything in front of the motor. Same thing when guys swap the cummins, the huge intercooler is the most difficult part but it CAN and HAS been done. Even in a half ton. Its also funny to me how you say the "2500 frame" have you ever takin the time to actually LOOK at an OBS frame il_duramax? ALL of the 4wd frames are identical. They have a seam right at the firewall because the front section is a little different as far and the a-arm positioning, but even the rear of the frames are identical besides a small support bracket on the front spring hanger for added strength on the 2500 and 3500 models.
