got a call from my Brother in law last night who drives a 2000 4dr 4x4 V6 4.3 S10 blazer and said that while cruising down the interstate the truck simply died as if someone had turned off the key. He was able to safely get to the shoulder where he determined the battery still had power to run lights, flashers, gauges, and crank the motor but it woudl not fire up. By the time I got to him with the car trailer the battery was dead from the flashers so we got it loaded and brought to my house. From there I hooked the charger to it and the lights/accessories came right back on as well as a very weak attempt to crank the motor. After charging the battery overnight crank is strong but no fire. I can hear the whine of the fuel pump kick on with the key and off with the key and that is about as much trouble shooting as I have done so far.

I have read a little bit and it sounds like the fuel pressure regulator are prone to failure but sound like a PITA to replace but I would think that would cause sluggish response and stalling not a complete no start. If anyone has had similar symptons please feel free to chime in with where to start or what to look for.

The blazer is by no means babied and maintenance is not my brother in laws strong suit so my immediate thougts were fuel filter, plugs, wires, battery was replace in 2009 so it should still be fine. will probably check the starter but would that cause the motor to die while running? Again the truck was running fine, didn't sputter or stall, just died and fortunately have enough power to get out of the way of traffic.

Thanks for any advice or tips anyone might have.

Clogged Fuel filter, can reduce available fuel flow and cause it to die... also the internal wire harness goes bad (on the ground) and you can replace it if you pull the sending unit.

Thanks for the input. Filter was on the list to change and has now been done but unfortunately was not the problem. I can hear the fuel pump whine when you turn the key on and off so I know it is getting power and by disconnecting the flex line side at the fuel filter and turing the key I know the pump is pushing fuel. Now I need to check if it pushing enough to build up the right pressure. Thought I had a fuel pressure gauge at the house but I was apparently wrong. Should be picking one up today or tomorrow to check pressure and go from there. I think I was told that it would need between 55 and 60# on start up and should drop to around 40# pressure at normal idle...can anyone confirm that?

Anyone with experience on these can feel free to chime in as well for anything else to check or similar problems you may have run into.

Thanks,

That fuel pressure sounds right, the fuel pump on the vortecs were all the same IIRC.

thanks. As much as I am hoping it is the pump, I really am not looking forward to dropping the tank to get to it. The pump couldn't go out when the tank was empty, it of course had to wait until it was full.

Thanks again for the info,

Ignition module.

Do you have spark?

Yes, there is spark. If you take the air intake off and add fuel directly to the motor it fires up long enough to burn off that little bit of fuel. Also, there is fuel as far as the inlet line that is located just behind the air intake that feeds the motor. I am just wondering if there is simply not enough pressure building in the line to crank the motor.

Thanks.

I would then start by checking F/P , IIRC mine on my '98 was close to 58-60 psi running. But it has been a while.....

If the F/P checks out I would then suspect control module as it sends a siginal to the ECM to tell the injector to fire , could also be a bad injector ......

Spider injection assembly....thats most likely the culprit
