View Full Version : My muddy truck broke down (pics!)

Well, I found a small mud whole over the weekend and had lots of fun playing in it. Needless to say, I went today to wash the underside and engine bay out. Somehow another, I ended up throwing a CEL and got the "Reduce Engine Power" message on my display. Sooo, after a AAA tow, its at the shop waiting to be looked at on Monday. So we'll see what they say....my guess is I wasn't careful enough and something got wet that shouldn't have
So today's lesson, DON'T wash your truck's engine bay:whyme:
Here's why I was cleaning the engine bay:

Here's the azz while waiting for AAA:

And the 'Hoe being dropped off at the shop:

Nope looks like a puddle and I bet that if you had let it sit and dry out there wouldn't be any problems.

in texas, thats fine. in Virginia whatever got wet will corrode into oblivion if its not found and greased (if its electrical, which im betting it is).

:dunno:
Works fine here, I wash under the hood whenever I wash my truck/car, I would think it would be just as corrosive here.

I thought you guys used cinders on the road?

Thanks guys for the compliments! Its been sitting at the shop over the weekend, so I'm hoping they can just reset the ECU on Mon and I'm good as gold!

I can almost guarantee it's a fouled out knock sensor.

Don't be. The aforementioned sensors are not protected, they just sit under the intake in the valley there; They collect all sorts of ****. I had the same thing happen on my truck. If you're going to wash out your engine bay, just disconnect the battery, cover the alternator and blast away, then let it dry out for a while.

*Update*
Throttle body needs replacing, throttle body sensor has corrosion, and there was some water inside the intake box :O

Throttle body needs replacing? I can understand the sensor dying, but the TB itself? That's interesting. Did you try to clean the inside of your engine with a hose too?
s2kstephen
11-01-2010, 10:54 AM
No, just used a pressure washer to wash the bay out. Didn't have the stream facing the intake box at all. The tech said the sensor is permanently mounted on the TB, so if it goes, a new TB is needed...

Yeah they love to go bad. They also throw codes even if they're not bad but get a little wet. Just make sure to let them dry out before driving (and disconnecting the battery is a damn good idea - why did I never do that?)...

I always cover the air filter and the alternator. I avoid shooting directly at the oil cap too...
s2kstephen
11-01-2010, 08:24 PM
Well, lesson learned: Leave it dirty! haha
Gonna cost me ~ $900 :O
DMANbluesfreak
11-01-2010, 09:09 PM
Leaving it dirty would probably cause more problems down the road... but $900 seems kinda steep.
What year is your 'Hoe (is it drive by wire)?
s2kstephen
11-01-2010, 09:46 PM
Its an '04, and yup, drive by wire.
I'll have to double check the exact details of what they said they found. If I remember correctly, there were 3 codes it threw. 2 of them were related to the intake/TB/TB sensor (corrosion) area. The other, a sensor that seemed to be "jerry rigged" got wet which seemed to have shorted out as well...
The tech thought there were issues already, it just so happened that a little water caused it to all crash down :fail:

man, that is a tight looking Hoe. Im digging the rims/tires.
I once went mudding in my dads 89 sierra and to try and hide the obvious so I took it to a pressure wash place and went to town, finished up and went to fire it up and NOOOOOOOOO, wouldnt even turn over. So from that point on I have been very funny about pressure washing under the hood.

Just make sure to cover up important devices. Air cleaner, alternator, coil, etc. And make sure your oil cap is on tight. I was mine all the time but I don't have hardly an electronics, if you even want to count the distributor as an electronic device.

i washed my bay out about 4 months ago. the next day it threw a knock sensor code (said knock sensor was bad) does that mean its really bad or just throwing a code? my check engine light is still on. ik i need to get it fixed but freakin dealership quoted me $650 :thud:

I threw the following 3 codes:
P0220, P1516, P2135
They had to replace the air filter, throttle body connector wiring harness, and the throttle body.
That + alignment = 1k :whyme::mad:

Ah did the axle scrape the side of the truck?

Ah did the axle scrape the side of the truck?
Missed the rear window by 2" and put a small hole in lower quarter below the two tone line and took out the lens of the tail light. It also made my tranny throw a P1870 code after we drove/pulled it out of the 1/4 mile long trail. So never the less I replaced the axle shaft both side bearings and seals and rebuild the whole drum assemebly for the drivers side and replaced a tranny!!! And now its on the road again and maybe the trails by this weekend ... who knos!!
And that picture is exacly how the truck landed after the axle broke and we poured outta the cab ....

with my old jeep I had the opposite experience. My truck kept dieing I could not figure it out, so i pulled the battery unhooked the computer, and washed away. hooked it all back up to bring to the mechanic and it started working great. Later found out My ground on the engine block was so wet with mud it was shorting out.

I'm gonna go tomorrow and attempt to clean the engine bay and the whole damn truck.
Hopefully nothing happens

Holy cow 900 bucks, you could have easily got that done fore under 200.
s2kstephen
11-04-2010, 08:13 AM
I don't know about under $200, but I'm sure it could have been done for cheaper. I just took it to my normal shop because time was of the essence.
Anyone know what I could get for my truck? Considering selling it due to a change in jobs

You can get a nice throttle body for about 130 bucks, then by what ever sensors that were bad. Easy 200 give or take.
