Gas to Diesel???

I am going to be picking up a 93 CC Dually.
It has a 454 in it.
How much work would it be to put a diesel in it.
Was thinking about something out of a NBS or NNBS engine and trans.
What do you guys think?

I haven't checked lately but I'm thinking a Dmax and tranny are gonna cost double what the project vehicle is worth in the first place.

I agree!!!.....Anyways with the swap it might be more cost effective to 5.9 cummins swap it with a first gen 12 valve out of a Dodge

Thats a rough estimate of what youll spend in parts (more than likely)

Your best bet if you want a dmax, is to search for a wrecked truck with a good motor / trans.
IMO, best motor would be a LLY or LBZ Duramax, with a 5 or 6 speed allison.

If your looking to save alot of money, and have a truck just as respectable, swap a cummins 12 valve.

Everyone loves a cummins!

& with all the money youll save, you can spend extra on go-fast parts.

Not really a diesel fan but why get rid of the 454. The 454 will make all the power in the world for what you will spend on a diesel swap. Just put a whipple on it and decent camshaft. The BB will get fairly good fuel mileage after some tuning. If you want to go a little further find a Vortec 454 out of a 96-00 truck then your possibilities open a little more.

you could put a cummins or a duramax in your truck BUT with alot of headache i mean alot, you will be in for a project. now there are alt of people who dislike the 6.5l diesels but you can buy a new 6.5 with the upgraded crank and block for 3,500 bran new. now if you swapped a 6.5 in the truck it would bolt up to a 40le transmission, bolt up in the engine compartment right to the engine mounts and all you wuld have to change is the wring harness which you could get from any 6.5 parts truck (they are easy to come by due to the poorly built gm blocks).

that is if you want a 6.5 i am in the works of doing such a project myself:D.

For what its going to cost you to swap this is you could have one nasty 454, or you could venture further into an 8.1 (L18).

If all you really want is a diesel, buy a truck with one already in it. Save you a ton of time, money and headaches.

A diesel swap to a 6.2 or mechanical 6.5 is easy. They use stock small block motor mounts as well as your being able to use oem parts like the alternator, AC pump, etc... But a good point has been made, if you just bought the truck you could easily just sell it to get a truck that is already a diesel. It's a lot less work, and takes a lot less time. Or how about just beefing up that 454? If you do it right, you could also get better mileage with the right performance parts that offer better power. You have a lot of options here, good luck!

One more thing. If you DO decide to go diesel, you're going to have to decide which way to go and a Duramax and a Cummins are definitely possible. But the cost and complexity of the wiring of the DMax is something to consider. The Cummins could be a very easy swap with regards to wiring if you go pre-98. The big downfall with this engine is the weight. Otherwise it is an incredible engine with a lot of aftermarket support to install. But if you want to keep your GM looking stock, you really can't go wrong with a properly prepped turbo'd 6.2 or 6.5. Hell, it was good enough for the military for years, gives great mileage, and although not a speed demon it will definitely work hard for you.

Read around the forums here and others, as well as just peeking around the web for your ideas and information. You have SO many options! I'm prepping my '89 for a possible 6.2 swap as we speak if the problems I find in my 5.7 that brings me just about 20 mpg are bad enough that I have to stick a bunch of money and work into it. Then I could get nearly 30 mpg if done correctly.

i was also thinkin of replacing my 305 with the 6.5td or a 454bb. but i found this site that sells long block and complete engines , www.65engine.com, but i also wanted to know how hard would it be to go from a gas to diesel? what would i have to change in the fuel system? i dont know alot about diesels but would appreciate the info.
