Here's the deal ... my buddys got an 98 s10 4.3l, rebuilt the tranny (4l60e) and it runs and drives now. But the speedo is aprox 8 mph off. And when he tries to use a handheld tuner the tuner says error 38. He seems to believe that the ecm has been flash tuned.
He went to the junkyard and bought an exact replacment ecm for the truck, when installed it runs for 2 mins and then shuts off and will not even try to restart the truck. He called the dealer and they told him the ecm is "vin locked" to the s10 it came out of. They then told him that once the ecm has had the original tune it can not be flashed or retuned back to stock settings. They told him he needs to buy a brand new ecm and buy a stock tune for it.
Can this be true?? And if it is why do junkyards even bother pulling ecms outta trucks for resale??
Any help would be appricated thanks...
