So...I've got a little problem. My car started overheating today going to work. Stopped at a gas station, it was out of water, although I just checked it a few days ago, and the water level was ok. Filled it back up, cranked it up, didn't see anything leaking, so I started driving. Made it about 1/4 mile down the road, overheated again. Now, keep in mind I had stopped long enough at the gas station for it to cool down completely, gauge was down all the way when I pulled back out on the road. So, I checked the water level, it was empty again. So I got the car towed home.
Well, I've been messing around with it. Water isn't actually leaking out anywhere, but it's a PITA to crank up, idles really rough for a few seconds, then smoothes out and runs good. But, there's smoke and water coming out of the exhaust.
I'm 99% sure I know what's wrong, but what are some of your opinions? I hope everybody doesn't start saying what I'm thinking:thud:

It would be best to just finish the truck and drive that instead.

Are we thinking head gasket?
My friend had overheating issues with his 96 z28 for awhile before the head gasket finally went badly.

No, I'm thinking the car just hates me and is trying to kill itself:lol:

Yeah, head gasket is at the top of my list of things I think need to be replaced.

Mine will look like that very soon. Just gotta finish the truck first.

When the head gasket went, he decided to go 383...it has been an expensive project and it is not done yet...been well over a year. I'm thinking he should have just fixed the head gasket and called it good.

Meh, I'm not doing a 383. Just rebuilding what I've got, or dropping in a new short block. Either way, it will be all forged. But at 180k miles, I might as well go ahead and build it while the car needs some work anyways.

Sounds like a good plan, and yours lasted a long while which is nice. His only had maybe 101k on it.
