View Full Version : 6.5 diesel leaky injection pump
I have been fighting a diesel leak from the top of the engine. This morning, I replace the rubber lines to and from the fuel filter bowl. One line to the IP and the other to the water drain. While there I cleaned up the fuel that had accumulated below the intake manifold. After putting everything back together and firing it up - still leaking. Since I can now rule out the fuel lines, I looked elsewhere. I noticed that the there is some type of solenoid on the top of the injection pump that is leaking. It is about the size of a 35mm film container and there is a 6mm allen holding it down. Before I start pulling that apart, what can I expect? Are there o-rings in there I can replace? What is that part?
Any help appreciated.

Fuel shutoff solenoid. The old style is known to leak. Update to newer solenoid.

Why replace the pump, or even the solenoid? if you can get it out, replace the o-ring.

The old style leaks through the solenoid, not out of the o-ring. I replaced the o-ring on mine and still had the leak. It leaks up through the inside and out the top.

$90 roughly to fix.
After cleaning all of the leaked fuel and installing new fuel lines, I could then see the fuel leaking through every seem in the solenoid. I ordered a new one, and it should get here tomorrow. The difficult thing will be to get the old one out. It was recommended that I apply heat to the lower portion to release the thread lock. I will post back my results.
Using a hot heat gun, things went smoothly. I pulled the upper intake and the thermostat for easier access, and used a large vise grip to help. Once back together, it fired right up, and does not look to be leaking.
Thanks for the help
