how do you pop off the door strap caps... do they just pop off and do they break when you take them off?

by door strap, do you mean the thing you pull on to shut the door? if so, yeah, the caps on either side just pop off

The caps have four tabs, one at each end of each of the long sides. Tthe tangs on the tabs are on the side opposite the cap itself. Lessee if I can do this in this font. Looking at the short edge:

So, I use a very small screwdriver in the middle of the short side, and dig it into the edge of the cap and pop it out. I don't pry against the bracket at all.

Mine are different. Mine have two almost hook-shaped tabs that slide underneath the aluminum piece toward the center of the pull strap, and one that just pops in on the outside of the cover, toward the outside of the pull strap. Mine just pull right off if you grab them hard enough and pull both away from the panel and away from the pull strap (depending on which side you're on). Not to jack your thread, but is there any way to keep these from popping off when someone uses the pull strap to hoist themselves into the vehicle? My dad is kind of stubborn and refuses to use the armrest for this purpose. When he pulls downward on the pull strap, the little covers pop right off and the tabs break. I believe I have it installed correctly, it's just one big screw going through the metal bracket and the strap itself, but that doesn't protect against up-and-down movement, which ultimately pops the cover off and sometimes breaks it. I was wondering if there's any trick out there to prevent this.
